Camping for surf

Postby Laguna » Thu Dec 29, 2005 6:56 pm

Hey, just wondering if anyone here camps in the summer by a surfing beach, im thinking of buying a tent for this summer so I can do a bit of travelling checking out all the best beaches in UK. Anyone do it?

I plan on doing that this summer if I can get a car, or a ride. That'd be pretty tight, surf all day, camp out at night. only problem is, its illegal to camp on the beach, which would be downright awesome. I think im gonna look for one of those state parks that you can drive right down on the beach, and camp, cook, fish, and most importantly, surf.

yeah, I was searching earlier for a couple spots near me, found some that you can camp on the beach-that would be killer, especially if I could hunt there too, but I think that's asking a bit much

You can get away with beach camping on the lesser beaches and coves for the odd night here and there as long as your not taking the piss (leaving rubbish, mess, noise etc.

Vans are the way foward but even they too suffer from legal restrictions on over night parking etc. Again ythe same applies, don't draw attention to yourself and you can get away with it.

General rules - Don't camp / park on National Trust land over the summer as you will get turffed out early morning.
Same goes for town beaches over the summer. The police will patrol over night.

The problem with the 'best' beaches is often that they're the most popular ones, and hence are the most difficult ones to camp on :?

So as a general rule, if you want to do the popular spots, go to a campsite

But if you can get away from the tourist spots (can be tricky without a car) then its not too much of a problem :D

So...
Stay away from the tourist-traps.
Stay off national trust land - they often have volunteer patrols who are worse than the police!
Make sure you can put up your tent in the dark

And this is a big one...
If you're camping out on your own near the beach, make sure you've got a mobile and its got reception. If you're out there on your own and you have an accident or get trapped by the tide you'll REALLY need it!

Maybe we should start a SurfingWaves hitching sign - I sometimes pick up hitchers in the van, particularly surfers, but if I knew they were on here then I'd definitely pick them up! :D

So if you see a purple camper van - wave like mad!

I dont pick up hitchers but if I was on my way to the beach and saw a surfer hitvhing to get there for some surf then I probably would pick him up as im going there and hes a surfer so he should be cool.lol.

Camping is cool as long as you have somewhere to put the boards - my friend and I got dropped off in Croyde once for a week - we ended up sleeping with our leashes on so that noone nicked our boards!!

If you're after a tent take a look at a big Tesco Extra shop - they've got a Family Camping kit complete with 2 bedroom tent, 1x double airbed, 2x single matresses, 4 sleeping bags & a gas cooker for.......

wait for it....

£49!!

Awesome!!

That's just too good too be true.

What's the drawback? (Apart from being sold by Tesco)

I camp on the beaches in Qld, Australia, during summer .. the holiday season is always a little busy so I don't usually go during those times, however it is so good to wake up on the beach, walk a few meters, and be surfing all day.

If you haven't tried this yet, give it a shot .. you won't regret it.

3 of us slept in the back of my friends Ford Sierra estate in a layby near Croyde once.

We got woken up at 3am by a policeman shining his torch in. We thought we were for it, but he just laughed at us, then got back in his car and drove off.

Fleshin freezin though!!

We had the police come round one night while we were parked overnight in the long term car park behind the village hall

There were four or five vans all huddled in the corner in the shadows (this was deepest darkest winter. Dont try this in summer) and the police car cruised on in...

Then they checked that no-one was nicking boards etc from the vans while the owners were in the pub, and left us to it happy in the knowledge the vans were safe :D
