Hey! I have the same problem!!!

I went to the doctors and they told me that the salt in the air dehydrates the body!! They said we have to drink more water when near the sea or we will become really dehydrated!

I have been drinking loads recently and it's worked! I feel much better now and don't need to keep taking breaks in between waves!

Give it a try surferbabe, tell me how it goess!

Ha ha. Salt Water in your mouth always makes you thirsty! Make sure you are super hydrated, and....maybe keep the mouth sealed shut when you duckdive.

I grew up around the ocean, so I can't ever remember getting this. I'm sure you'll eventually adjust and get used to it.

I never havd had this problem even if out for a few hours. But then again prior to surfing I take magnesium and drink water until Im full then drink some more again. But drinking just prior to physical activity doesn't do much in terms of actual hydration; you need to start 2-3 hours before then more a half hour prior. I start the night before for dawn patrols and a few hours before if for an afternoon surf. Dehydrated is different than thirsty; tissue needs time to absorb fluids and so long as you top up well in advance if your sesh, workout or whatever activities you do, your mouth may be dry but your body is saturated and functionality should be normal. Drinking alot of water just before your sesh is akin to a hard rain in the desert; much of that water will not be absorbed and will simply run off - in human terms straight to the toilet bypassing other body systems.

Last bit; if you’re the type that has hydration issues, minitor what you’re drinking. Get rid (or at the least reduce) of juices, coffee, soft drinks, alcohol and make water the central and nearly only thing you drink.

Last last bit: there is a guy I see out sometimes who wears a little backpack when he surfs. Seems like it might be annoying but it stays on and out if the way and is big enough for some wax and a couple bottles of water I imagine.

Read up about magnesium; i eat alot of seaweed and leafy greens which have high amounts of Mg as well as take a daily supplement. Here’s a blurb:

Magnesium is one of the essential electrolytes needed for efficient hydration. Sorry to disappoint you kids that were hoping I'd recommend a Gatorade for your tryouts; instead, you need to eat real magnesium and potassium-rich foods, and drink lots of water. A few magnesium stars include leafy green vegetables, pumpkin seeds, flax seeds, almonds, cashews, pecans, walnuts, brown rice, avocado, beans, raw cacao, edamame and seaweed.

FYI, I live in the tropics and am a young 52years old and have zero hydration, cramping or thirsty issues now that I follow the above advice, even if out for several hours.

Bagus and terimah kasih this is really good advice for tropical surf trips and stays, also not overdoing thenwater time and pacing yourself in sessions.

Tropics also recommend early morning and pre dusk afternoon sessions, ( wind dependant).
Not good for next day hydration is a hard hitting alcohol night out!

I always get thirsty when I swim, dive, or surf - even in the pool. When I rinse my board I always gulp a little water.

As mentioned above it helps to have water an hour or so before, then another splash just before I start.

Electrolytes (magnesium, sodium, potassium) can play a very important role with the water intake, like Geezer said. Water alone can also start to have diminishing returns and flush some of the existing electrolytes out of your body at a certain point.

I try to have lots of Magnesium in the days before a good surf forecast or if I'm planning PT at the beach
