Sinusitis..

Postby PipeDreams » Sat Feb 18, 2023 10:37 pm

In surfing I haven’t really had any problems with muscles or my actual body (other than injuries ofc), but I don’t get off the hook that easy as I get really bad sinus problems after I surf in the colder months. Usually headache ear ache and tooth ache where the sinus swells up, but I’m used to it and it normally comes after a run of swell when it’s flat so I never think too hard about it, just get on with it, however after surfing my brains out earlier this week I got it so bad I had a constant heavy thumping pain in my head and my forehead was super sensitive to the touch. After a few days of living off painkillers and on almost no sleep, I’ve started antibiotics which is starting to help but is still feeling pretty bad. I don’t particularly want this to happen again, so does anyone here have any tips n tricks for helping out sinuses and preventing sinusitis? I saw on a Nathan Florence video how he clears his sinuses and although it works and I always do it after a surf I can still get inflammation after surfing, although less frequently than before! Thanks in advance :)

I have occasional sinus problem related to allergies. Surfing helps to make it better, LOL Maybe it's the warm water? I use a corticosteroid nasal spray (fluticasone) for my sinuses which is much more important when I am not surfing
So what is worse.... dying or regretting it for the rest of my life? Obviously I chose not regretting it.

How strange..
It must be the water temperatures, I’m normally surfing in 7 degree water at this time of year!
I’ll give some research to the nasal spray thanks for that OMS!

Pipe, I'm a long-time chronic sinus sufferer, from sinusitis to full blown infections. Learn to perform warm, salt water sinus washes (e.g., lavash) as soon as possible following surfing. Bring a thermos of hot water and you can do at beach. You can use table salt (sodium chloride) or specialty salt mixtures that have more potassium in them (easier on sinuses [NeilMed® ]). Some people use a netie pot I use a Clear Plastic Squeeze Bottle (12 oz.), with the tip cut to an opening of 3/16 to 1/4 inch. It's also helpful to drink hot tea or hot coffee soon after surfing. But, this alone is not adequate. Learn to wash & soothe your sinuses as aforementioned.

Billy is on the money with this advice, also the advice on surfers ear.
There are a number of Ear plugs that stop water entering our ears and work to prevent boney exostosis, * build up of thickened bone in the ear canal.
Pipedreams this may be more likely if you are getting sinus swelling more severely as the ear canal may react the same way effecting the bone.
