oldmansurfer wrote:You are reading others who make blanket statements about boards and surfers. The websites are generally set up to sell boards not give you correct information. There is so much variation among boards that even mass produced boards with the same design work differently. There is much variation among surfers as well for instance I have a hard time with shorter boards because I am old and not in the best shape and not an advanced surfer. So the same board design that works well for advanced surfers at pipeline would be useless for me but I am pretty sure I can use my 8 foot board there as I surf a steep hollow left hand break a lot at various sized waves. However I dislike crowds so you won't ever see me at pipeline

Youre right, even tho there are alot of reviews i should still not 100% believe them or think it will work for me because everyone is different,i think the saying is "take it with a grain of salt"

thank you for your help with everything :D

Where I live custom made boards are cheaper than stock boards but I guess it depends on the shaper.
So what is worse.... dying or regretting it for the rest of my life? Obviously I chose not regretting it.

I usually browse Craigslist for second hand boards and see what works. I can usually resell them around the same if they dont work out. That worked out well for me after getting back into surfing.. because all of the shapes had changed drastically from the late 90's and i had no idea what would work for me now.. I just knew that I was on the wrong board back then, just like everyone else from that time.
Nowadays I usually look for boards with something unique about them.. to see if it works with my surfing style or the way the waves break around here.

A month ago i asked for a quote for a custom board from a local shaper who shapes for sharpeye surfboards for a epoxy step up with a carbon tail patch for strength and it was $890 plus tax so around $900+.when the regular stock Pu board is i think $760 and thats pretty much around the price of all the stock pu boards that are well known

Definitely cheaper depending on the shaper.

Like if i went to a shaper that is not i guess “main stream” it would be $730-$780 for the same board epoxy, carbon patches with the same outline but not the brand.

Don't shapers make pu boards anymore? Or are you saying pu with epoxy resin? That can be done too but don't shapers make pu polyester resin boards anymore? I'm really not sure of the cost of the various materials but carbon fiber is expensive. The question is will it make any difference to you? That part I couldn't say but maybe a shaper could. I think the advanced surfers like boards that flex a lot which means they are more likely going to buckle at some point and they like really light boards but want them to sink more so they use Pu/Pe which is heavier and weaker than epoxy/polystyrene. Basically they like disposable surfboards. I haven't gotten good enough to make use of a disposable board but seems like many surfers are. The recent south swell on Oahu had lots of broken boards. I like my boards made to last because I don't plan on getting more anytime soon

Yes they do,but i ask for eps epoxy board not just epoxy resin because they last longer, for me i cant just buy a whole new or even used board if i break one also i only every used eps epoxy board, i never used a pu polly board before so i dont know if i would like a pu polly board but i am getting a pu polly groveler in less than 2 weeks so who knows i might make the switch to PU polly if i like it way better.

Personally i want the carbon fiber tail patch to straighten the board,im not at that level where i can feel the flex of the board when it has a tail carbon fiber patch or not,it would have to be very dramatic but its only $30-$50 extra which is not much to have your board last longer,i had a carbon fiber stringer on my fun board before but i got rid of it because i dont like big boards

the only thing about the eps epoxy boards boards i dont like is when its gets really choppy and windy it kinda jumps,i dont know how to explain it but it feels really bumpy and i wouldnt have thought it was because of the eps epoxy if i haven't heard its because its a eps epoxy board from so much people and hawaii does get very windy sometimes over 30mph but at least this past weeks winds have been tamed and pretty good

Yeah the south shore swell has been gnarly i think it has been one of the biggest swells to hit south shore in a while.i watch the surf cams in the morning and some of these sets out back look huge on a camera thats a mile away so you know they are huge
