First Groveler Surfboard

Postby Dyyy.lan_ » Tue Aug 03, 2021 10:22 pm

Hey,
I been riding a 6'2 Sci fi 2.0 that has 38.9L of volume and it has a medium entry and exit rocker,I
been riding this board in everything from 2-3ft mush to over head decent waves,i have a bunch of fins that i use depending on the conditions and it has been great,But the waves have been very mushy since there has been ALOT of wind like 40 mph this past week and the channel bottom of my board makes it feel super stiff when i want to do super fast pivots because of the traction the channel bottoms make and it also looses a ton of speed bc of the medium entry and exit rocker even when i use my FCS II AL MERRICK TWIN + Trailer (pivot fins)(i do speed pump),
i love in board but it only really excels in 3-8ft average to really good waves so thats why i want to get another board that is a groveler
also this board feels a bit too big for me it feels more like a step up board for me mostly because of the amount of volume it has

I def could just deal with it and work super hard to do any maneuvers on mushy waves but i would like to have way more fun with a groveler

Im 5'10 150lb
i live on Oahu,HAwaii
Surf almost everyday for atleast a couple of hours
I think I can consider myself as a average intermediate surfer

By now i pretty much know what i can ride in terms of size of the board (length, width, thickness and volume) but im just seeing what anyone's opinions are just incase,i was thinking a 5'10 groveler fish that has about 34L of volume with a flat rocker its called a Sharpeye modern 2 in PU construction.

Thank you

Easy Fix............................. just take out the center trailer fin. The channel bottom, as you said, already provides a lot of traction so on smaller waves ( or you need to loosen things up a bit ) you don't need the trailer.

Btw, the Sci-fi is one board I wouldn't use a Twin-Stabi set up on.

Yeah basically turn it into a channel twin. They can have lots of hold on there own. If you still notice it after, you might wanna look into chatter, if you boards an epoxy.. they can be kinda difficult in choppy conditions... especially when you're already getting lots of tail lift from the concave

I actually tried that yesterday and it was too loose,it was 3-4ft so it was a little big for just using the outside fins so maybe when its 2ft it would work way better

And yeah i heard that alot but i like it alot i did some of my best surfing on them, more advance surfers may not like them since they would be doing more advance maneuvers on them,i have the fcs 2 reactors neo glass, fcs 2 performers in neo glass and pc carbon but i only use the carbon when its 5ft+ for the extra stiffness, the al merricks twin plus stabilizer and a Hayden shapes quad setup which i kinda hated

im going to use the Fcs 2 Reactors neo glass(its like the am1 futures thruster with a slightly smaller center fin)today in maybe 5ft surf and see if it will feel better since i only used them once
