Rincon Point, according to most surfers, may be the best wave in California. It is referred to as the “Queen of the Coast” for its perfect waves and is located at the borders of Santa Barbara and Ventura counties. It is the site for the 37th annual Rincon Classic Surf Contest that occurred on 26 & 27 JAN 2020.
But, there is bad news from 28 JAN. A 38 year old surfer/musician from the nearby town of Carpinteria, CA, passed away during a Rincon surfing session. The name of this young, well-liked, and talented surfer is Lauren Luther Campbell.
The news was first broken on a local news website by a gentleman that tirelessly serves the Santa Barbara community by monitoring police, fire, and other emergency scanners (e.g., Roger the Scanner Guy). Emergency services personnel responded to a call for a water rescue at about 14:00. Early reports state Campbell was surfing when other surfers noticed he was unconscious. He was then taken to shore where bystanders rendered CPR.
It was reported that Campbell is being honored with emotional tributes by friends and loved ones on Campbell's Facebook page. (However, it appears the page is removed from the internet.)
The official cause of death has yet to be released by the Santa Barbara County Sheriff's Coroner
