NEW ZEALAND surf trip in November - WETSUIT advice?

Postby Bananadude » Fri Oct 14, 2005 11:58 am

I am off to New Zealand in November for 2 months for a bit of surfing. Need to get a new wetsuit before I go, but only really have a budget for one, and I've been hearing mixed things about the temperatures and what suit is best for different parts of the country. Would I be ok with a 3/2? A 3/2 with detachable sleeves could work out well if it's warm enough, as I can use it in the North when warmer without the sleeves. I get the impression a 4/3 is definitely going to be too much for the warmer North Island. I don't want to freeze my ass off in the South though! Any advice much appreciated...

Ok, I live in the upper North Island, but am from the lower South Island. I have lots of experience surfing both...

In November there is about a 8 degree difference between here & there. I am very comfortable in a 3/2 in the North Island in November...if fact by then most of us are into our short sleeved & short legged springsuits.

If I go home to the South Island at that time of year I take my quality glues & sealed 3/2, and take booties...I find this is ok for about 2 hours surfs max. I do have to "keep moving" however and I do get cold hands.

If you are going further south than about Dunedin, or going to the west coast of the south Island...take a 4/3.

Compromise. layer up with a 3/2 & you'll be fine.
