Why does surfing give you slightly pigeon feet?

Postby dustcloud » Sun Dec 01, 2019 1:42 pm

I've noticed with myself this and other surfers. Is it the constant position on the board?

You might be onto, something there, are you noticing short boarders or long.
I just have ask too, is it different down the pecking order at your break?
Nice topic to see what comes up.

By “gives you pigeon feet” , do you mean your stance is Front foot at 4 o’clock and Back foot at 2 o’clock? ( if you’re a Regular footer ).

Or more like Duck feet , like Front at 1-2 and Back at 4-5 ?

When I walk my left foot points forward but my right foot points at like 2 o'clock, but that was from my first deployment.

There are a variety of stances used in surfing, for a while I saw people using a knees together stance which would be a pigeon toed stance. I currently use a stance with my front foot at about 1:30 to 2 o'clock and rear foot at 3 o'clock. When I am not surfing my feet point straight ahead and when I walk my toes point outward slightly (opposite of pigeon toed)
So what is worse.... dying or regretting it for the rest of my life? Obviously I chose not regretting it.

Well, no response from the OP, but if he ever chimes back in, Pigeon Feet stance is a sign of a couple major problems:

1) Trying to turn from the middle of the board
2) Locked front arm to the body
3) "Strong" stance ( like a strong or weak grip in golf ) which is good for frontside but makes backside surfing harder
4) Unconfidence or Scared

Cause and Effect. You have to look back to the root cause of the Pigeon Stance. If you have a problem, go back two steps.

I'd think it's the opposite. My feet are slightly splayed when I stand on a surfboard. When standing and walking too. Pigeon toed sounds uncomfortable and would make you more prone to falling. Feet spread comfortably, bent knees, lower center of gravity... you see where I'm going with this?

Luckily I managed to avoid the pigeon feet. Maybe I've not surfed long enough to develop them yet. haha

That would explain why I keep tripping over my feet, now if it helped my duckdive
