Can I repair this soft board?

Postby pancho » Mon Sep 24, 2018 7:39 am

Hello, I'm new to this sport. I bought a sponge board, it wasn´t in great shape, scratches, the plactic bottom is all cracked, and two cuts on the top, the deeper one in the middle, I thought maybe it was for marking the center of the board

Well, unfortunately when paddling out, a wave broke the stringer where the deeper cut was. I read in this thread viewtopic.php?f=6&t=26719 about a similar case.

But if the board it's already cut open could I cut a section big enough (one foot) to glue two pieces of wood, maybe some screws and then glue the cutaway section. Or forget about it, just glue it as it is and only use it in white water and start saving my pennies for a new one.

Sadly I think you bought a bad deal, which is not much of a welcome to the surfing world!
The money you might spend on repairs to get to a water tight seal would be better put to a newer better board.
The wrong glues will dissolve the foam, the screws through the stringer are a break point under wave pressure.
The foam and the spaces between, will take on water and the board will become ridiculously heavy.
A valiant project to stop the board going to landfill
I’m curious, what was your thinking on why you bought this board?

Whatever board you plan to buy next, post photos and we can give you good yes no, advice!

So welcome to,the forum , you have friends here to help you get going! :D

Interesting idea. I think it can probably work but if it were me I would use metal plates like the kind you can get in a hardware store. The real Issue is replacing the foam you have to remove to do this repair. You need to be careful about glue too because it might melt the foam. You can always test stuff on the foam you remove before using it on the board. I haven't ever repaired a soft board so I know nothing about it but I am a sort of MacGyver kind of guy.
So what is worse.... dying or regretting it for the rest of my life? Obviously I chose not regretting it.
