Surfers Trashing Praia de Amado - Portugal

Got this email from a concerned visitor to Praia de Amado and thought I'd post for all to see (and comment on).

To whoever thinks they might be able to do something!!!

Attached are a few awful snaps that I took while on a surfing trip in Portugal. While in the South we spent quite alot of time at Praia de Amado. There were loads of people camping over the summer and I believe from the locals once the summer is over there are only surfers camping.

I did not want to stop people from going to this place but I just wanted to make people aware of how they were polluting their playground.

During the midday sun the stench from the build up of human faeces especially in the cement ruin was disgusting.

A can't believe that travellers staying at Amado are not going behind in the mountains to poo and why they are not digging a hole, burning their toilet paper and covering in the hole when they are finished. This is how I have been taught to deal with my excrement while travelling.

As a scientist, I know that Amado can not handle this sort of polluting pressure for a sustained period. The surfers will suffer when the rain comes and faeces, toilet paper, tampax and sanitary towels are washed into the water. If it continues there is certainly the risk of disease, Not to mention the possibility of not being able to stay at the beach in campers.

It is a national park so officially we are not suppose to camp there anyway. There are two portable toilets. I don't understand why they were not being used.

The problem with rubbish was also terrible. Why are people just driving off and leaving there rubbish to be blown and washed into the sea where it will remain for 100's of years to threaten the marine life.

I can not comprehend how people can be so ignorant and selfish. How can you crap on one of the main footpaths to the beach???

Who can make this stop without the privilage of camping at this beach being taken away????

How can surfers pollute their own playground?
