Try to rent a 5', if that's an option, so you can experience surfing it before you start building. Maybe a Sweet Potato 5'0 or a Baked Potato 5'1, both are the Firewire brand.

If after trying this you still want to go ahead and build a 5 foot board, then go for it!

I'd recommend you get the specs on a good beginner board and try to clone it. If it works out, you'll have a nice beginner board, if not, a nice wall decoration.

I really am appreciating all the positive support. Renting a 5'0" board is a good idea. If that won't work, I'll try a 8'0". If I end up standing, and I don't like the 8'0", I can gradually try a shorter board, until I find the length, and design that fits me best. Right?

Regardless, it'll give me time to learn, while I gather materials, and then build the one I need.
