Ive been surfing the last couple of weekends. I feel like on at least one or two waves i popped up and i was leaning too far forward. Is their something i can do to eliminate this or is this something that comes with more time in the water

Try to describe exactly what happened.
So what is worse.... dying or regretting it for the rest of my life? Obviously I chose not regretting it.

The court you are playing on ( unlike in basketball ) is ever changing, as so it goes in nature. Sometimes you need to be more forward, other times back. But in your case as a beginner, you are probably :
1) looking down at your feet or the deck, which draws your body/torso forward and down.
2) not fully confident in your pop up technique and where your feet land.
3) popping up in the whitewater versus the clean green face. That turbulent bumpy foam make you feel and is unstable.
4) Glue Foot. You might unconsciously leaning your upper body to make up for your stance being too far back. Easy remedy is to adjust to the situation and pick up the front foot and place it down more forward.

Sounds about right. I usually pick things up at a fast right so i may just need more time in the water
