Leaving board in the sun

Postby BaNZ » Mon Jul 31, 2017 4:48 am

I usually leave my board in the sun for 30mins to an hour after a session to dry. It's usually around 26 to 30c air temp. It's usually very hot when I pick the board up, is that very bad for epoxy boards? I see people leaving their PU board in the sun all day though.

BaNZ,
the Torq and other supplier websites say to provide shade, if you can. Boards are expendable. Sure, we like them to last as long as possible. Leaving them in the sun on a surfing day cannot be avoided (often). Ask yourself how many days per year you leave your board out in the sun? I bet it's not that many. So, it's probably fine. If it makes you crazy, then drape a large beach towel on it. IF you do this, please remember to remove towel before next session.

And are those owners of the PU boards actual surfers ? Why would the board be needing to take a suntan instead of being put to use as it should be.

EPS standard blanks contain more air than PU, so in the hot Sun the risk that this air expands and causes delam is bigger than with PU. For longer periods at the beach, I take a daybag or would at least recommend a board sock, also for UV protection.

I'm guilty of this in the past. However, I'd never do this to a nice board. Just wipe it down and cover up or put it away, hopefully NOT in a hot car. Else you'd have the dreaded delam as per my recent thread.
