Surf trip to portugal or france

Hey guys
I want to take a surf trip to Portugal or France in the beginning of October.
I know it is the season and the waves will be good, but I'm afraid that I will
get a very large swell. Does someone know here if there are sheltered spots if the swell is really big?
I'm an intermediate surfer
