Tell them they can't go out during a lightning storm because they may get hit by lightning. seriously.

Or that eating beef causes colon cancer.

Not sure what you're saying here. The people you rent from won't let you surf because of the risk?

That's a huge heap of male bovine poop. *G*

Ohhhhhh . . . "rents" as in "parents." I've heard about this in Aussie speak -- cut the word back to one syllable, and an "e" on the end of it maybe.

So "breakfast" becomes "breakie."

Rents eh . . . ??? I've heard of this. Parent's think it's dangerous, or that surfers are nothing but dope-smoking slackers.

I don't have any solutions, except the obvious -- that you get older, and one day you're no longer a minor.

I'm afraid of sharks. It keeps me out of the water sometimes. I hear stories . . . Fact is no shark attacks here in 30 yrs. That one was a freak and none reported before that one.

So get online or inquire locally about shark attacks. I'm betting they're so few and far between as to be non-existant. Like lightning striking you -- Chances are slim to none.

if your parents still wont let you surf... even tho im sure they let you cross the street without holding their hands, swallow food that isnt entirely chewed, eat hard candy, ride in a car, fly in an airplane, and ride a bike... you could just save your money, wait until you can drive (i dont know if you can or cant) and just buy a board and go. what are they going to tell ya? thats what i did anyways…

edit: all the shark attacks ive heard about lately have been spongers anyways lol

show 'em that surfing is a positive thing - that it can keep you active, keep you out of trouble; and that there are things that are much worse that you can get involved with. Tell them that you could spend your time surfing or spend your time getting wasted, jackin' cars, beatin' up little kids, robbin' liquor stores, blowing up buildings, sellin' drugs, listening to boy bands, joining a boy band, etc, etc. They'll get the picture.

or talk your dad into trying it with you. maybe he'll get hooked. then you'll be set...

I agree with coconuts. My parents are the same way but they realize that it makes me so much freaking happier than being at home and keeps me out of trouble.

I'm just wondering why they let you surf while in Waikiki, but now that you are home, they won't allow you? Maybe you should talk with them about it again, maybe they just heard the freak incidents that have been happening around the coast of Fla. and got scared. Tell them that your chances of getting attacked by a shark are about 1000x less than being attacked by a jellyfish, yet they don't tell you not to go into the water because of that. Besides, most shark attacks I've heard of have happened closer to shore than further out where the line usually is (assuming you're comfortable with being out further).

I would just quote the legendary Lt Frank Drebin from the Naked Gun:

"You take a risk getting up in the morning, crossing the street, or sticking your face in a fan!"
