What got you started?

Postby sinistapenguin » Mon Apr 19, 2004 2:19 pm

Just thought I'd start a thread to see what it was that triggered people to start surfing.

Did you watch 'Point Break' and think, that looks cool?
Did you see someone surfing at a beach and want to try?
Were you roped into it by friends?

I have been racking my brains and I think for me it was this: I was into my skateboarding at the time and my parents recorded Big Wednesday when it was on Moviedrome on BBC2! (This must have been 1990 and I still have the tape!!) They only let me watch the end - Big Wednesday itself.

The next thing I know I bought myself a board, having only ever tried it once before. My best friend bought a board too and we were hooked within hours!

So come on, what triggered you to get out there?

Yeah....sneaky...

Well, I'll answer your post for you. Ummmm, guess it helps growing up in South Africa where all you ever see are surfers, almost all my brothers surfed and every day you were at the beach it was swarmed with surfers. Makes you wonder how come I never tried it in SA but only when I came over to cold England....beats me, guess I'm just a bit on the mad side.

Anyway, always having wanted to try surfing but never having got round to it (think the whole great white sharks circling the waters in SA kinda put me off a bit and strong currents too) made me get my first go when I went to visit my bro in Jersey.

He's an avid surfer and always has been since I can remember. I go see him every year in Jersey. A month to go and I'm there again...YAY!!! :D Anyway, he had two surfboards and two wetsuits knockin about the house and we were down at the beach one day, there were relatively small waves but it looked good and he said "fancy pickin up the surfboards and giving it a go?" I was like, DUH!!! What are we waiting for? So, needless to say I had my first experience out in Jersey and got hooked. I've been a strong swimmer all my life and LOVE the water, I grew up in water. So I was pretty good at the paddling thing and have pretty good balance so could do the sitting on the board thing straight away etc. I was LOVING it and promised myself i would return to Newcastle and get the gear together to get started. Only took me a year, but that included getting my driver's license and affording all the gear. So now I'm a keen surfer who is well into it. Oh, and watching "Blue Crush" over and over again totally got me in the mood every time. Kept me keen while I was learning to drive and buying the equipment bit by bit. Of course, what previously also helped was all the other films... The Endless Summer and Endless Summer II, Point Break and Big Wednesday.

There we go, I always land up writing essays...why is that?

Hey, I hadn't even realised that was my 100th post - wahey, looks like I'm finally a surfer then.

No, really, I was interested to find out what gets people interested. I've just been reading the history of surfing on a website and basically it's amazing that it survived after the explorers discovered Hawaii.

Basically the missionaries convinced (almost) everyone that surfing was the devil's work and shouldn't be done.

The 'haole' all but wiped out Hawaiian culture, so I was keen to see what it was that kept surfing alive!

Cheers

I used to skateboard,(and still do a litle) so i was already thinking about surf, that is skateboard´s origin. Then i broke my wrist, witch is fine, the pain was not so bad, and the cast was bad but that would not stop me from skateboarding, if i was not a classical guitar studant trying to get into university to do music. I can´t afford to break some bones one a year ot every two years, so i started surfing. It seems impossible to me to live without the sensation or carving around with some board...

I've just remembered an earlier surfing experience of mine.

I was in France on holiday with my parents (aged 10 or 11) and some friends of theirs had a basement full of Windsurfs. In amongst them was a surfboard they had made.

One day I asked to borrow it and lugged it all the way down the beach.

My brother held it in the water while I climbed onto it in a standing postition (holding on to his head). When the next wave came, he pushed me into it and that was it. I rode my first wave to the beach without having to pop up!!

Wow, hidden memories!

I just thought it was the coolest thing ever, ever since I was a little kid! And then I saw Point Break....then I was majorly hooked! It's just the best sport ever and I love it. Not that I'm actually any good as i only got the guts to try it last year, but hey! I'm working on it! I love Bodhi!!! ahem. sorry - yes, i know he's fictional...! Later, Barbie x

well, it was actually my sister who got me into surfing.

ever since i can remember, she's talked about surfing adn how good she was gonna be at it, and she did reports on surfing and all that stuff, but never really tried until we went to Hawaii for spring break. I always thought it was cool, and thought it would be fun to try, but never thought i would get this hooked, but i really wanted to try it when we got to Hawaii, but didn't tell anyone, for fear of crushing her dreams. when my parents asked if we wanted to go surfing Tori was like "of course!!" and i was just like, "well, if Tori doesn't mind me going along too", cause i didn't want her to think i was just doing it because she was. but when i tried it, i felt really comfortable on the board, and even got some turning down. I've become addicted to it! but i feel bad, because tori always talked about loving surfing and how good she was going to be at it, and then i go and take her place about loving surfing. so i don't think that i'll go surfing agian anytime soon, because i don't want her to think that i am a copy cat.

well, you probably didn't want to hear that and don't pay any attention to it......the moral of the story is........that i was addicted to surfing after feeling comfortable on the board in my surf lesson (that's the only part you need to read!)

If your sister really loves surfing, then she would want you to keep it up.

I'm trying to get my Dad into it this year!!

I'd like everyone I know to get into it.
