Yeah....property sold with a duplicate deed is a scam and the real owner shows up after the seller is long gone.....local partners who take advantage of foreigners.....but there are ways that are secure; just have to look in the right places.

Coffee is a diuretic. Local home remedy for constipation is eating macadamia nuts ( you drink Guava juice for diarrhea ). So I hope you know toilet paper is expensive too.

Hey there,

if I may chime in on real estate prices: France is *not* cheap, and neither is the Spanish side of the Basque country -- San Sebastian is Spains most expensive city. It is not as insanely priced as NorCal (where the tech bubble is distorting things heavily) or Hawaii (where rich incoming folks are distorting things), but it is far away from cheap.

Portugal, in comparison, is much cheaper - both from the real estate / rental perspective as well as the cost-of-living perspective. Check house prices in and around Ericeira.

Cheers,
Thomas

I am not sure if I did or not usually if I am buying Hawaiian coffee I buy coffee grown on Kauai (it's called Kauai Coffee). It's pretty good but I am not a coffee fanatic. I like Uban or Folgers and don't think much of Starbucks except those creamy sugary flavored things where coffee is a minor part of the flavor. I generally drink about 6 cups of coffee a day :D
So what is worse.... dying or regretting it for the rest of my life? Obviously I chose not regretting it.

Cost of living is expensive in Hawaii but it's all realative. Due to the cost of living, one tends to get paid more. So even though a McDonalds worker may start out at $15 hour in Hawaii where it might be $8 in Montreal - that same McDonalds worker cannot afford an 1 bedroom apt on their own in either city. I was renting a condo at the Ililkai in downtown Honoolulu from 2009-2012 and my rent was $3000 a month moved to NorCal in 2012 and rent a town home for $3000 in Los Gatos. Los Gatos is no comparison to Hi, yet my rent is the same. The San Fran Bay Area is way more expensive than Hi with no of the benefits, water is cold and woman aren't as pretty. Lol. What I am saying is cost of living is realative a certain type of worker can afford basically the same things in similar job markets in different markets. If you, being from CANADA and look in the Hawaii newspapers for job you would probably freak out at one some very basic jobs pay in Hawaii especially compared to the part of Canada that you live. If your job is online and you earn wages to support yourself in your hometown you cannot keep that job and move to a more expensive local you will have to work in that market to get paid competitively for that market. It's all relative my friend. I said in my prior post, if you really have the itch to try another lifestyle, save some money and go. You have to be all in or you won't make it and will end up going back to where you came from saying you couldn't make it work. Sometimes you just have to GO. Very similar to surfing, you won't make it unless you are all in.

Isn't Montreal a surf town?

And also, close enough to New Hampshire's breaks that we get a lot of people from Quebec coming to surf on weekends.
Why move?

I remember the Kona coffee from a family vacation ages ago. My memory of that coffee is so idealized that I doubt the real thing would satisfy me. I do like good coffee, though, but I'm too cheap to pay for it. I'm drinking Kauai Coffee myself right now because I found it cheap at Grocery Outlet.

Yeah, Hawaii is too rich for my blood. I envy the people who can live there, though.

I don't have expensive cars etc, I do buy quality coffee, wine and single malt whiskey. The extra money goes in having travel experiences with my wife. Says he near the Mysto Austrian point break! Schnapps in hand!

Well, there are still affordable properties around San Sebastian, if one is a bit flexible and does not mind some commuting. On some islands there is only either expensive prices or really expensive prices. The problem is also how much money one can make at a certain place, the purchasing power, salaries relative to the cost of living..

Very true! :-) Many times the all-in approach is the best one, even financially... even when it looks suicidal to trade even more futures, hehehee... that's one of the ways that could allow me saving enough to retire for good! The other one is some time in Irak and sounds a lot less appealing... just half serious (about Irak)... but I think it is very brave to leave and pursue your dream without looking back!

Step by step.. I am swimming a lot again, getting back in shape. Will go to the Basque Country and Portugal this year and then think about the next destinations. Hawaii looks terrific and I already have the money to go and stay for an extended period, but I think at this point I would not make much of the trip, as I have all to learn about surfing!

Thanks everyone for your info. I'll look into New Hampshire for sure! Pretty close by! I'm also looking into Guatemala because the living expenses there are just so cheap! Not sure how the surfing is though...more research to be done.

Thanks again!! : 0 D
