Training and Diet

Postby scatman » Thu Jul 28, 2005 1:26 pm

I tend to be a bit of a wimp when winter comes round and find it hard to get in the cold water, tend to piss off abroad.

But when i do get into the water it takes ages to get the fitness back. By the time im fit im in front of the fire with a cup of tea watching big wednesday or north shore or summet.

what can i do to stay fit. I know swimmings good, but have you seen my local baths!!! YUK!

What about food? any sugesstions from you fit heathly guys?

When im training, i eat 4 to 5 smalls meals a day, when i eat protein foods, i try to eat the same number of grams that i weigh...... example: if you weigh 150 lbs then you eat 150 grams of protein a day, or if you weigh 160 you eat 160 grams of protein a day. ill do another post again to make sure but i believe u eat 2/3 carbs? eat healthy fats.. like vegatable oil with pasta or somethin. im gonna start training again soon for winter. i hate summer surf.

working out:
Do pushups, pullups, popups, crunches. anything to start ur body moving. then hit the weights if you want just to keep in shape. i tend to do more shoulder exercises cause genetically i have weak shoulders. do some research on exercises there are tons out there if you wanna get fit. im not saying you gotta be arnold schwarzenegger or anything, using weights the right way can get you strong or fit. or whateverrr.

so many possibilites,

Keep it simple; treat your surfing as you would any sport, running, climbing etc. Fitness for surfing is no different. Buy a copy of Rocky Snyders recently released book "Fit to Surf; The surfers guide to strength & conditioning"

It's all there, easy to read, easy to understand for those new to the idea of training - and it's cheap.

go to it..

swimming really helps if you can swim in an indoor pool. Head ups are the most effective. And dont forget to eat right. Sweets are out for sure.

tokyo, how do you fit 160 grams of protien into a day's worth of food. ive been looking at everything since you mentioned this to see how much protien it has, and i cant imagine how you fit so much protien in.

when I'm training for polo season I eat those protein packed power bars before practice and a four to one protein to carbs something (like a ham sanditch) after, but I also have eggs and stuff for breakfast, burgers and salad for lunch, then try to eat a smaller dinner but with a protein base (tacos or something).

not exactly sure how much I get but I really notice a difference when I eat this compared to other things

oh and drinking a slim fast with your meals helps build up bulk for football or hockey or something.

well, these are from guy's point of view, heres a females view, just eat right,
< drink lots of water, in the winter 8 glasses a day ( pints) - i hate water so i have flavoured water, and i drink 9 bottles of that a day and its tasty -
<make sure you have breakfast - a light breakfast < i have a banana , whole meal bread toasted - and orange juice -
<have a snack before lunch, - like, a fruit bar , with water or another peice of fruit
< then a salad, for lunch, i have avacado , but i do but sugar on it!! or a healthy sandwich or pasta!!
<another snack of fruit!!
<dinner, make sure it has low carbs, lots of protien, and vibre, and low low fat!! but drink water with yah meal, a glass of red wine dont hurt, because, its more healthier then white wine, and low on salt, because, wen yah in the water it tends, to wrinkle yha skin more!!

exercise reguarly, swim as often as you can, dont eat before you swim , as this will make you bloated!! and dont eat before you go to bed - as it will take longer to digest yah food -
Exfoliate yah skin, by going to the beach , and using the sand!! its 100% safe and 100% natuarll!!
now, i'm a 14 year old surfer girl, but if you stick to having a healthy meal!! and drink loads of water everythink will be rite!!

Don't you get funny looks 'exfoliating' on the beach at Gt Yarmouth or Gorleston?

I would say the 2 things you need for surfing are Stamina & Lung Capacity!!

You need to do some aerobic exercise to keep yourself in shape - this will increase your cardiovascular fitness and improve your stamina.

However, if you want to shed a few pounds, add a bit of weight training in.

If you do purely cardio/ aerobics then you will burn fat because your metabolic rate will be raised. It will stay raised for about 1-2hours after exercise.

If you add in some weights your metabolic rate will stay up for around 4 hours after exercise so you will be burning fat for longer.

I have Rocky Snyders book and it's pretty good.

As for diet, lets face it if you surf in the UK then when you go to the beach you're going to drink and stuff your face with pasties and fast food!!

It's good to have a healthy diet, but don't restrict yourself too much because you will fail!!

Cheers

As far as i see it surfin trains you the best for surfing. I run on a frequent basis and run 10km races competitively. I also do a fair bit of resistance training, in particular upper body. Ok, I'm hardly Mr Experienced but when i started surfin it absolutely killed me (despite a high fitness level) but after two weeks in the water i found the sport far less physically demanding. I think extra training helps but you should just surf more.

i wish it was that simple for me. i would love to surf for 3-4 hours everyday, but i live 3-4 hours away from less than mediocre surf :( kinda blows....

It'll always be fleshin' hard work, but it does get easier as you get better :D

Theres the obvious stuff like fitness and technique, but somehow or other you begin to compensate for what the sea is throwing at you 8)

...Or maybe its just you learn to look at the ocean and go 'nah, Im not goin' in there! That looks hard work, I'll find somewhere else!'

I still wish paddling out was easier though

A good paddling technique does take a lot of the hard fleshin' work out of it.

If you surf beach breaks though, you're still in for the fleshin' shifting peaks and no channel paddle out!!

all you have to do is wait for a lull then paddle like your life depends on it until you make it to the lineup. well okay, im spoiled beacuse its never that hard to paddle out where i surf, but i dont mind getting knocked around trying to get out. it adds to the fun haha
