Dumb question about dolphins

Postby cfe1978 » Sat Jul 23, 2005 5:28 pm

Hey Hey -

I was out on dawn patrol this morning in Santa Monica, CA (only one out in the water from what I could see).. I was near the line up and I saw several dolpins about. Not thinking anything of it, I continued out and within the hour when I was in the water one dolphin brushed against my leg. Never having this happen I freaked out like a baby, but continued my way. So my question is, do I have to be concerned about anything?

Clearly they are friendly, but I wanted to check in about this one.

dude you're so lucky, dolphins are the best, I think the closest I've gotten to them was about fifteen feet away, there was about four milling around in a rip, four if the giant ones that were like, big, and I was just amazed, because I only have seen the little ones before.

now you have fleas, watchout ............... kidding, anyways, yeah dolphins are great. i've actually got to pet one before, but that was at Sea world ;) i dont think you have any real concerns except just dont get to friendly, they're a wild animal and can attack and such.

peace

hehe... I surf Santa Monica, CA, too! and yes, I have been seeing schools of dolphins quite a lot lately (I surf late-morning to noon, though). Cool, eh?

I feel really safe in the water when I see a school around...

yeah ive seen them out there too. Dolphins kick ass. The other day I was out by myself near reef point. Just sitting on my board and about 5 ft away a seal or sea lion (cant tell the difference) just pops up and stares at me for about 5 minutes :)

I went fishing off of todos santos this week for yellowtail, but water was too cold or something like that so we ended up fishing on the bottom for snapper and such, but anyway back to the surfing related thing whatever, I was surfing durring red tide at night so the water was glowing (not off the island), and I saw this glowey thing skipping across the surface and was like damn that's awesome it's a fish, then saw this huge streak behind it that just nailed it and swam off which totally freaked me out because I had no idea what it was, but I woke up the next morning there was a sea lion sleeping on the beach so I'm assuming that's what it was....

still scared the xxxxx out of me...

Actually, just cuz dolphins are around, doesnt mean that sharks arent. They both eat the same thing, so theyll be in the same area. Ive also heard some pretty crazy stories of dolphins getting pissed at surfers and "attacking" them. I like them alot, but i respect them just like i do a shark.
