key loop on wetsuit broke

Postby hcfkavh » Tue Sep 16, 2014 1:05 am

Has this happened to anyone? I just got this rip curl suit in feb. and the key loop snapped luckily not during a session. Has anyone ever sent in their suit for repair? Couldn't image it would be a pleasant experience, that would be my last resort. I have another suit but my bulky toyota key won't fit in the pocket same with the leash pocket. I heard about those portable storage locks but supposedly they malfunction randomly. I had cash stolen from my car once so I never want to "hide" my key again.

Is there any of the loop left attached to the wetsuit? You could tie some new cord to it using your cub scout knots. I presume its in a key pocket, so there is extra protection from the pocket in the event that your rigging goes bad

Since it's not an electric key you could always wear it on a cord around your neck under your wetsuit.
Those security locks with the combination locks are pretty good.
If thieves are that determined there is only a piece of glass between them and your goodies inside.
Breaking glass is as obvious as is carrying tools to break a lock.

No, have not had the misfortune of key loop breakng. Sorry you did. In California, there are several wetsuit repair shops that I'd inquire with. On to some ideas that may help immediately:

1. Get key made without bulky plastic head (I did this for my SUV key)
2. Wear key on cord around neck (this is what I do)
3. Cut bulky plastic head off key (that's what my buddy did)
4. Place key in locked "real estate" style key box that is loocked to car (trailer hitch, two hook, shock coil. My spare house key is held in one of these boxes. The box is locked to an electrical conduit.)

I have a wetsuit with a zippered pocket holding the key loop.
First time it broke, I broke it off cause imessed up the knot, and I fixed it with a drop of aquaseal, simply by pushing the loop and the bead of glue back into place.
It held but then I had to break it again cause I messed up the knot.
So now I only rely on the zipper :)

What you can do also is get a strong cord (eg fishing line or something similar) and tie it through the hole on the zip pull. Tie the line to the key, then put the key in the pocket and zip up fully as normal. Just gives you a slightly better level of protection - if the zip comes undone, the key is still tied to something.

Or bury the key in the sand and hope you remember where you buried it...

I always just swallow my key and then puke it up when I come in from the surf. Only problem is I have to remember to puke it iup before about 2 hours or I will have to wait another 10 or so hours for it to come out (entirely just kidding here so don't try this at home)
So what is worse.... dying or regretting it for the rest of my life? Obviously I chose not regretting it.

Remember, be kind to your door locks and ignition switches by lubricating them frequently. This is important for keys you take into salty and sandy water.

I had a car that only started if you banged the alternator with a hammer first. So buy a terrible car that doesnt start, then leave the key anywhere you want.

All of the surf shorts sold here have a loop for a key. So I guess if you wear surf shorts under your wetsuit then that would be another option
