There is really no way to tell about how long a board will last with a beginner . Experts will break a brand new board the first time they try it. A beginner might do the same. depends on the force of the waves and how heavy footed you are and how much you are pushing your limits. The board may last a lot longer or not but really any damage can be repaired so the life of a board is endless just that it may get a little heavier with time. At any time you could put a huge ding or break the nose or tail off or the fin boxes or even break the board in two. All of this damage can be repaired but the board won't be the same. It will get heavier but may actually perform better with more weight or not. It's complex. If it is a good buy or not depends on who is buying it. If you are determined to learn on a shortboard even though everyone has advised you not to then maybe you can be one who can do it. But if you find the challenge too much then $120 for a board that makes you frustrated is probably not worth it. I learned on a shortboard as did numerous other surfers but for many the learning curve is too huge.
So what is worse.... dying or regretting it for the rest of my life? Obviously I chose not regretting it.
