Hi There

I will go one better than just answering the questions.

I am about to start up a graphic & web design company and i would think like this:

Keep the logo simple - if you look at the more effective logos like Rusty, Quicksilver, Rip Curl you will see that they are all very simple.

I would also go for your basic design in black and white. If you can come up with a design in b & w that is effective, then it will be very versatile.

Also, colours tend to drift in and out of fashion so I would limit their use. Black and White will always stay firm favourites and you will notice that a lot of people will go for boards with as little colour on as possible. If you have a good solid B&W logo, you can colour bits of it differently at different times to vary it and keep it cool. (I used to have an Instinct board which had a little bit of purple in it's black and white logo and it had purple fins to match - looked very cool!)

If you can make the logo have a reference to surfing that's also cool - Rip Curl have a wave shape and Quicksilver has a wave in front of a mountain to cover both Surf & Snow aspects.

Now's the hard part though - Try not to rip anyone off!! This is going to be hard, because there are lots of people out there doing the same thing. Use other logos you see for inspiration, but don't plagerise.

Try to come up with some aspect of surfing that appeals to you ie. Board, Wave, Leash, Wax, Deck Grip and try to blend this into your logo.

Try to think differently - think about what message you want to get across, there are lots of different emotions and feelings you could associate with surfing. Speed, fear, adrenaline or mellow, carving, relaxed.

If you look at longboard manufacturers logos, they look different to shortboards cos the whole vibe is different.

Carry a pencil and scrap of paper with you everywhere - you never know when an idea will hit you and you need to capture it straight away

Finally, don't be afraid to scrap ideas and start again. If you can't get inspiration, do something you really enjoy - ideally surfing - it will come to you!!

Hope this helps
