Kitesurfing?

Postby RickNWsurfer » Tue May 27, 2014 4:33 pm

My surf vacations became even more fun when I learned to kitesurf a couple of years ago. On windy days when the surf isn't great I can still shred and have fun. More and more of my surfing buddies are now learning or want to learn.

Just curious, how many of you kitesurf already?

The down side is it can be expensive to learn. Check around because sometimes you can find some good deals on lessons.

FYI: There are some hotels in South Padre Island, TX offering super low room rates and free kitesurfing lessons when you stay at their hotel from Oct - Feb. KitelandResort.com has more info.

I have a couple of neighbors that kitesurf. One of them tells me I am crazy for going out in surf that only a kitesurfer should be out in. He means big gnarly windy surf. When the waves have some size the wind doesn't affect them much and there are clean faces since the waves block the wind (it's onshore so the wind is blowing on the back of the wave and not the front)
So what is worse.... dying or regretting it for the rest of my life? Obviously I chose not regretting it.

oldmansurfer,

Where do they kite on Kauai? I know that Maui is a mecca for kitesurfers and Oahu also has some great places to kitesurf. I have wondered what the other islands offered.

Well I am not sure of all the spots but they come to Wailua beach which is where I surf. They are only there when the wind is strong enough but when it is it is usually just me and them out there.

As if we'd do something like that.... ;)

I kitesurf way more than I surf primarily because the beach I live at is a better kiting beach. I ride my own. Custom built kite surfboards and also have a good collection of early directional/mutant style kiteboards that ride regularly. I also go out on my 7ft single fin magic carpet. I get a lot of pleasure from the different riding styles the different boards require. Been kitesurfing since 1998.
