Polyester Custard point

Postby squeak » Wed Sep 25, 2013 8:35 pm

Hi all,

I'm looking a bit advice about what surfboard to buy. I am a beginner looking to buy my first board and will be surfing in small enough waves (Southern Ireland ~1-2 feet). I was thinking of buying something about 7'8 or 7 10'. I'm 5'4 and 55kg so I'm not sure if this may be a bit big. I've seen a second hand 7' 8 polyester resin mini mal for sale but I have read that polyester is heavier than epoxy so I'm a bit worried that it may be difficult to catch waves on. I've put the full dimension below. Are custard point boards good? Any info would be appreciated.

7'8" x 15 1/2" x 21 1/4" x 14 1/2" x 2 3/4"

Polyester is the "normal" surfboard, which are a bit heavier than epoxy, but should still be reasonably light.

Those dimensions should be good for you at your height/weight. It might be a bit much to handle on dry land, but at least you can check that before you buy, and it should be fine in the water.
You could probably go a touch smaller if you wanted to, but the 7'8 will be a good first board to learn on.

I don't think I've ever ridden a custard point board, but there was a fair number of them in the water when I surfed in the UK, and my impression was that while they're not top-end stuff, they're great for a beginner.

I second DBBB's comments and ive known a few people who've had custard point boards and said nothing bad about them. Infact they've regretted selling them.
