I loved this part "using money I no longer needed to spend on a recent ex’s birthday present" (although I'm sure it wasnt as amusing to you at the time). So much better than the usual alternatives - talk about a silver lining.
FWIW, and I'm male so perhaps have a different prespective on things, no surfers judge you on how you look in a wetsuit. I mean, they are the least attractive clothing to wear at the best of times, so don't flatter anyone; but in any event most surfers judge you on how hard you try and how well you follow the rules. Of course, the whole 'Puberty Blues' culture probably still exists at times in some age groups, but Bondi aint that place. People are too busy laughing at/trying to avoid the backpackers.
