Hi jhunter31, welcome to the forum! You need a board with length and width...i would recommend at least a 7 - 7.4 and 21 - 23 wide (Minimal or funboard). Going too short in the beginning will frustrate you as it is MUCH harder to catch waves etc on a short board when you have no experience etc. Check out other threads on this forum and you will see the general consensus is to go " long and wide". Good luck and keep us posted with your progress.

Hey there welcome and get ready to be STOKED! :D I started about a month ago. Im riding a 9'0" Performance longboard by Russell. Its sweet. I also have a 6'4" fish, much thicker and I cant wait to try it out. Many have said its a good learning board too. But like our friend here.. long n wide is best to start w/! I'm up and riding but need to work on cruising the green on the long board. I'm mostly in the soup but have an occasional small green water ride which is AWESOME! BEST OF LUCK! I spent $100 on my Creatures of Leisure board bag, $40 on a soft-top rack, my O'Neill full body suit was $160..or $180?? I think.. If near Newport Beach Ca.. you MUST go to TKS Frog house off PCH and Orange St. They are hands down the coolest bunch of local charm, most reasonably priced around!! Oh and I got my 2 boards for $300! So stoked on that. $150 ea... thru a friend. Try CL too!
