Surfing with Scoliosis?

Postby msarafina » Tue May 01, 2012 6:18 pm

I am planning to take surfing lessons soon, but I have minor scoliosis. It isn't bad (less than 10 degrees). Is it safe to take up surfing in this condition?

I think this is something you should consult a doctor or physio about, and I'd take any other advice given on this forum, or any other with a pinch of salt. Does your condition prevent you doing any other physical activities where sudden movements or jarring are common?

msarafina , let's talk seriously about your scoliosis.

Firstly a scoliosis is in your lumbar or thoracic spine, of which there are several types ( curves that is) there are a number of reasons.
Scoliosis is only a medical name for the curve, but attention needs to be paid as to where the curve is and why you have a scoliosis.
That's very important as the causes can be anything from heavy school bags while you are growing and going to school or an early childhood injury
It can be work orientated and it can be postural. It can also be cause by imbalanced muscles or muscle deficiency and work injury.

It also can be from a congenital deformity, or if you are a young woman it can be an insidious problem called ideopathic scoliosis.
These two tend to be much more serious problems.
There are some diseases that cause scoliosis and are even more serious as the scoliosis is caused by the disease breaking down the bone ie Tuberculosis

First step get a fully diagnosis of what, where and how, discuss with your doctor your desire to surf. ( there is good news here many people have scoliosis and don't know and some that do know have no problems with doing sports). A doctor specialising in sports medicine would be ideal

Mick Fanning has a serious scoliosis problem but surfs at the elite level he is able to by a clear diagnosis and a plan has been worked out to overcome his problem.

BTW it is great that you asked as then the problem can be attended to and you will know your options!
Knowing too will be beneficial as you will be able to develop strategies to enable to work in safer ways!

Just a rider on this I had a Chiropractic clinic and taught an understand of Chiropractic to medical students here in Australia for over 35 years.
I haven't seen you to fully appreciate your condition! So getting a full rundown of your scoliosis is very important.

Good luck keep us posted :D

There are different types of scoliosis. Some people don't change and some may even get better.
You should be able to.
