The only Surfer?

Postby Hurricane » Mon Oct 08, 2012 4:07 am

I am bored and after reading a definition of a surfer by a "surfer", I am curious am I the only surfer who still says things like gnarly, thrashed, and rad?

Hurricane I prescribe lots of surf if you are bored and reverting to Dudelish as your first language.
Hope you get plenty and recover soon

LOL!

I have heard 'gnarly' as recently as last week when I was in Cornwall, someone said the flights of steps back up to street level from the beach were 'gnarly'. 'Rad' I have not heard outside of fiction and 'thrashed' I have never heard of (apart from when my favourite football team get thrashed. Being back in the Premier League this year is a chastening experience :( ) so I don't know what it means in a surfing context.

At jaffa1949 I would but my fall wettie has a gnarly gash in the right thigh (which hurt a lot and is limiting my ability to even stand up on dirt let alone my beloved board). I guess it must just depend on how you were raised haha plus I live in the US. I started saying those when I first started surfing and it has stuck with me. Rad is an obvious of the meaning and no I do not say radical because that sounds lame. Thrashed by my definition is getting (the "F" word) up. I.E. board hitting you or the fin slicing your thigh open in my case. 57 stitches not to shabby if I say so myself.

Well from Oz, that has knobs on it, hope you are feeling better and busier than a one legged guy at a bum kicking competition soon!
I hope you heal soon, I can understand your boredom now! :D

I'm a school viceprincipal, sometimes I let my surfisms slip out like"dude, what's your malfunction" and "dude, that's awesome" while doing a shaka sign

Thanks it should be about 2 more weeks until the doctor says if I can go back out yet. I wish my vp was like that he just sits at his desk and stands in the middle of the halls eating a donut. haha

Surf speak . . . SURF SPEAK! . . . Hell I do it all the time . . . "Ding" (referring to an dent on an £11millon prototype car I helped develop - see dodge durango as a result . . . a dent, the technology component had during optimisation!); Oh and the newer corvettes [S4 to date plus], and . . oh never mind . . . "Dude" I use all the time and "No Worries" . . . always!. As far as Gnarly goes see a vid I made in the depth of winter 2007 under the tittle of Gnarly Productions . . cold wet and soooo windy http://www.liveleak.com/view?i=fbd_1236513971. . . Anyway's I am ex senior steel plant research and deployment, ex gov't specialist; now in quality of the biggest on-line retailer on the planet . . and I still use surf speak . . . and I say that what I do to this day in town is it is not an outside practise!
I guess my motto is be true and be real.
