Hi Mike,
Masking tape will stick to a sanded blank. When doing swirls or resin tints you need to first blow all the dust off with an air gun, make sure its all gone. Let the dust settle then blow again. Then get yourself some big ass tape, 100mm if you can find it. Cover the entire deck (or bottom) overlapping the tapes by about 5mm. Make sure it is down well. Then lightly mark where you want your cut lap to be using a pencil. I used the rail as a guide and hold the pencil in a fixed position and run around the deck. Then using a sharp blade cut along the line and remove the outer piece of masking tape. This will leave the deck of your board completely covered. Then make sure the cut edge of the tape is well down. The cut itself will also act as kind of a resin barrier.
Flip over board and glass making sure you go over the tape completley. Now the tricky bit is timing your cut lap. Too soon and it will pull the cloth, too late and it will be impossible to cut through the hard resin. Get it right and your blade will cut through the resin smoothly.
Here's one i did a while back.

Good luck
