Surf near Charleston SC / Folly Beach

Postby RichD14 » Sun Jan 09, 2011 10:48 pm

Alright so I might have to relocate to the Charleston area for a job for the next few years, anyone know if there's enough surf there to go regularly. I'm used to surfing crappy waves I know it's the east coast. I've been surfing VA beach / obx for the last few years, and surfed the cocoa beach / Satellite beach area before that. Anyone have any idea how it compares to those places?? I know it's not as good is OBX, but I'm hoping it's at least better than VA Beach... Would it be comparable to the east coast of Florida?

Folly Beach Pier and the Washout (very near Charleston) are OK-ish by East Coast standards. Agreed, these should be better than VA Beach. Recall the early to mid-1970's promotional slogan for VA Beach was, "Virginia Beach is for lovers." No mention of surfers in that campaign! I kinda like Cocoa Beach near the pier. There is a slow and fat-ish longboard shell. It's much more consistent and often larger than Charleston.

Dude,

You are very lucky, Charleston, SC is one of the pearls of the US. The surf, albeit, average is there and yes better than VA beach. The Fall surf is usually a blast with the hurricanes. Summers can be flat, winter & spring bring cold water but usually something to ride.

OBX has better surf than Charleston.

I surf at the pier near the Windjammer because it's a lot less crowded! The waves may be a slight bit smaller, but you can catch as many as you want. I only surf at the Washout when there's an ESA contest. The waves here are better than Va. Beach, but smaller than OBX.
