Straya Day ;)

So today, many may not know, is a national holiday in Australia- historically, to celebrate British settlement. but in recent years, considering the callousness of using jan 26 for that celebration, it is really to celebrate all that it is to be australian, which includes the COAST, among other things  . So I figured I'd start this thread because I want to hear some surfing stories that some of you may have or may have heard about in australian waters. :D

Here's one of mine- was surfing my local break a couple of weeks back and heard rumours that there were stingrays about. a few people had been spotting them and someone had caught a shark there on the weekend so I was keeping a lookout, but wasn't thinking too much about it to be honest. then, I was sitting on my board waiting for a set when this MAMMOTH SHADOW swum directly under me. naturally I just froze onto my board, trying not to provoke what turned out to be this gigantic stingray- never seen one that big in my life. After about 20 seconds of staring at it warily, the ray swum away, followed by a smaller ray friend. Just a friendly reminder from nature that it's watching me, haha

now you! from shipsterns to freak sea creatures to crazy locals, there must be some good ones out there :D GO!

story for anyone reading this- might be interesting for you, just heard this yesterday-
some family friends were driving along a country road on australia day when a 6'8 kangaroo hopped up to their car, jumped onto their bonnet and started smashing their windscreen, windows and panels in. no joke. they had to carefully drive away with the kanga still on their car until it jumped off, then luckily for them a friend was driving past at the time and picked them up because their car was completely ruined. luckily they're ok, but the kanga met his maker and their car's in for some serious repairs over a couple of weeks.
bloody kangaroos.
