Welsh Surf Pioneers in the '60's

Postby pembssurfer » Thu Apr 01, 2010 9:38 am

I need your help! Did you surf in Wales in the 1960's, or know someone who did? Do you have images of Welsh surfers, beaches, waves or surf shops from the 1960's?

I interviewed one of the early surf pioneers, Paul Mchugh, but I'd like to speak to more! Please get in touch, the contact details can be found here. Thanks!

Billie,

Thanks for the feedback! Glad you enjoyed it, even if it featured some people you've never heard of!
It marks the start of a project for me, my eventual aim, if I can gather enough material together is to document the emergence of surf culture in Wales and publish a book.
Fickle waves, often grey and damp weather, the guys who took up the sport in Wales deserve some recognition.
Without sounding morbid, before the stories are lost forever.

All the best, pembssurfer

pembssurfer,
I think everyone will enjoy reading that interview. Those guys were tough!

Best of luck with your primary aim. It's an important undertaking.

Sorry surfnoob, not been here in ages!
Fresh West is my main break, but my local beach is The Wedge.
Not a regular at Manobier, but surf / photograph there now and again.

Speak to PJ at the surf shop down at Llangenith (Hill End Camp Site). The guy is a total hero and is also one of the lovliest chaps you could ever hope to meet.
I suspect he's been an inspiration for a lot of folk of the years. My surf buddy is a little bit in love with him I think and I can see why. Such a gent and surf superstar

Hahaha - yup , PJ is well known – he was the first person I bought Sex Wax Off !
I often saw him teach his son to surf at 'genntith without a leash to prevent bad habits forming (long time ago !)

Just last year he was in at Langland – on his very last wave he got tubed on the inside and he was stoked !
I got a photo of the critical moment as I was taking random pics of the surfers in that day.
