Surfing Bournemouth without a car?

Postby mktom » Sun Apr 04, 2010 6:04 pm

Sorry to ask questions, but to cut a long story short I'm moving to Bournemouth in September for university and want to start surfing regularly. I'm a confident skater/snowboarder so I thought I might aswell make use of living near some waves. Now unfortunately I wont have access to a car, so I'm just wondering how others get to/from there surf break without a car. The house im looking at is 3 miles away from the pier so I guess it's walkable but I'd probably be tired carrying a 7'3 mini mal by the time I even get to the sea and walking home with a cold wetsuit doesn't seem to appealing. Guess I could invest in a bike rack or try my luck with taxi's/busses?

Another question for any locals, are the lockers that are apparently at both Boscombe and Bournemouth pier's big enough to fit a board bag and set of dry clothes in?

Thanks in advance, Tom.

Not seen any lockers on my trips down there. And forget about buses, they wont take boards. Don't forget as far as the council is concerned it's all about business so if they force people to drive and park at £1/hr that's good for them. If you have to rent a board then that's good for business (and indirectly business rate tax) as well. Remember the reef is all about regeneration to attract cash rich punters. Sorry for being so cynical, hope you find a flat surfing flat mate with transport. Good luck

Thanks for the feedback, haven't got the board yet just thought it seems to be quite a popular beginner board, I've been looking at some smaller fish boards but by the sounds of it no public transport is gunna let me on ha. Once i've moved I'll have to cycle round to see if I can find these lockers I read about on the internet although I shan't get my hopes up. Guess i'll be investing in one of these bike surf racks (hope i'm not the only person to use one), and asking my housemate for lifts a lot then, shame its not as easy as when i grab my board and go skating :(
