Hi
I'm new to this forum, and am planning to take a 2 week surf course
the upcoming summer. I was just wondering, how much experience
some of you neefded to have beore you could ride waves like 5 or 6
feet high. A few weeks, months, or even multiple years?
It's not that I'm inpatient or smt like that, I'm just interested how much
time it took you all to start surfing overhead waves and make good
bottom turns, cutbacks, etc.

it depends on how often you are going to surf, if you surf at least 3 or 4 days a week and spend money on the right equipment and are fit, you may be doing reasonable turns in 6 months. personally, i never have got to a level im content with, its a constant learning curve. BUT, the all important factor is, i have enjoyed every bit of my surfing time, from the first ever successful paddle out, to the last quick session i fitted in after work and the whole 16 years in between. if you dont enjoy the whole process (if you can sleep while listening to a building swell) then you are not going to progress to a decent level EVER. enjoy your surfing zyt

If you're passionate, and you put in the time (and hence surf as much as possible) you'll no doubt progress very quickly. However, I find people differ towards surfing quite substantially, and thus progress at different levels - for some people its literally an obsession (me included) and it can influence your life choices very much so, whereas for others it may be a bit of leisure to enjoy a couple of times a year whilst on holiday. Where do you place yourself? - This is probably the answer to your question.

At first I only surfed on weekends to busy studying and working,then after finishing my studies got more serious about it, and made time to surf during the week as well, but from my experience and from what i've seen on average i'd say about 3 years to get decent at surfing, taking into account that at first you will start in summer somedays and not surf cold winters or too often at least, the better you get the more often you'll want to go and of course the more you go the better it is,

Dude - You might be able to surf those in a day, or after six months. It all depends how much 'feel' you have on your board, and that is if that board suits you.

Don’t think time – think surfing: a three foot and glassy is better then a five foot and blown out anyday.

So:

Surf, Laugh and have fun. – the experienced surfers will avoid you and not give you grief unless you are in the way on purpose (yup, we know a ‘spoiler’ from an ‘oopps sorry’ grommit).

Anyways:

The bigger waves need decision, timing, commitment and strong paddling – just go get some, not really a problem until you go for barrels and tubes and stuff.
