learning on a big short board

hello to all, i am looking to get into surfing and need some input on board selection

my budget allows a new pop-out, or a used custom. I would rather buy a used custom. i found a very nice Gum surfboard (local Sarasota Florida area shaper) for a very good price. it has a short board shape and is 7'6'' tall, 18.5'' wide, 2.5'' thick. I was originally going to buy an NSP 7'2'' funboard. i'm 6'2'' and weigh 175lbs.

i used to skate and do a lot of wakeboarding so my balance in general is pretty good. i'm just nervous about this board being to difficult to learn on. its a very nice board, and i like that its 7'6'', should be very buoyant. I'm also worried about the smaller surf in Florida, especially on the west coast. i travel to the east coast a lot also.

someone talk me into buying the Gum board lol

Sounds sticky to me haha. You mean Gun? A fun Board would be "more fun" when starting out. The Gun well..... it's made for bigger waves that your not ready for anyway. So I say no to the Gum lol

Gum is the name of the local shapers company. i ended up buying a fun board. when i master this i will have the shaper make me a nice floaty short
