Surfquake contest

Postby Broosta » Thu Jan 06, 2005 2:33 pm

Hi everyone :) .

Just a post to let you uk surfers know that there will be a surf contest to raise money for the Tsunami problems. It will be held at Cromer.
Here is more info:-

Surf Competition:
Surf competition to be held at cromer (conditions pending) on a weekend day with swell. It is to raise money for the earthquake appeal, and entry is £4, with bigger donations greatly received.
You can enter by texting 07733426337 or 07739117587 or by e-mailing cutbackmarts@aol.com. entries need to leave name, mobile number or e-mail address to get in contact with, board type(short, long bodyboard,) and their own rash vest colour to wear in the competion. (if you don't have a rash vest just put black)
Its supported by frameworks bike and surfshop and the kitchen shop on bells road in gorleston. You don't have to be a good surfer or bodyboarder, everyone welcome, just do it for the people affected in asia. ALL MONEY WILL BE GIVEN TO D.E.C who are co-ordinating the aid efforts. Thanks a lot, keep you updated,

Bucky and Martin

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

This thing is growing all the time. Just spoke to Bucky who says now over 70 entrants with loads more to come. Also now surf companies such as these are now expressing interest - rip curl, o'neill, nine foot plus, bear, lost, just add water, free spirit, and more joining all the time :D Looks like there will now be a sort of social event in the evening too with DJs etc. If enough people express interest then it could turn into a sort of festival type thing so come on down to the Cromer Surfquake Festival and 'ave it!

Cheers,

Broosta. :D

The competion was actually called Surfers Earthquake Appeal (S.E.A.) in the end.
The event went ahead saturday 24th.
Over 100 people entered in three categories - bodyboard, longboard and shortboard. Over £1000 raised for charity (D.E.C.). Met loads of sufers I never met before. Helped judge some of the heats. Froze my butt off. Had an amazing time. Surfed 2 good heats and totally sucked ass in the the final. Was humbled big time by the shortboard winner - 4ft airs, gnarly as f heyoooj tail drop floaters and numerous 360s! Never underestimate little Brazillion guys named Luciano!! :D

Here is a link to some pics and a rush job of a video - proper video is currently being created and will be available shortly.

Good work Broosta, and well done on making the final.
It's good to see that another Cromer contest went off.
How was the nights entertainment?

Cheers :).

In the end the contest was held too soon really (due to swell appearing) to arrange things for the evening social bit so it didn't happen... this time... but there was so much 'happy contest vibe' in the ether that I'd very surprised if there were not more comps in the summer - which would be far better as peeps might want to hang around after surfing and party since they wouldn't be hypothermic in the summer!

The old Green Tube Surf Shop held a few contests and got some good sponsorship from Headworx among others - and got a visit from Wavelength who covered one of the contests.
There are enough surfers on the east coast to get a regular contest going.

Yes, the last one was sponsored by Headworx and I think won by one of the Boex brothers, I was in Bristol at the time so didn't attend. I did do the first Headworx comp tho which was in Wavelength - got a nice £75 cheque for my troubles :D for 3rd.
There's deffo more surfers around this area now, and no Green Tube shop anymore - nearest one is in Norwich (J.A.W.) and thats cutting down on hardware so then Yarmouth shop Framework will be nearest.

Anyway Mr Surf Patrol you seem very well informed about the goings on of the east coast  - are you from this area then?

I surfed Cromer for years and used to live above the fruit & veg shop on the Church St.
