If you want to get all technical about tides, read this.

Obviously skip the first bit which is about the site, but further down it gets very detailed. Not remotely useful really but nice to know

Best bit, I thought, was about the double high tide at Bournemouth and the surrounding area... which apparently has nothing to do with the Isle of Wight after all... :?

(Dont bother with this unless you're genuinely interested. It has phrases like 'from harmonic analysis of tidal observations we can determine how the individual harmonic constituents which combine to create the tidal regime' in it...)

Those numbers are + or - a mean high/low tide. In other words they represent how many feet the tide is going to be above or below a normal high/low tide.

This also indicates what it would be if the weather is perfect. If you have a strong on shore wind it could be even higher tide or the opposite if the wind is blowing hard off shore it could be a much lower tide.

Going back to the content of the original post... there is every chance that this person thinks that tides create surf.. a lot of people make that mistake.

Local knowlege man... pick some people's brains at your local break to figure out when the best tide is. One break can be best at high another best at low and the breaks may only be a few miles from each other.
