Typhoons suck when they hit

The surfs been xxxxx for a week now. There has definitely been swell, but its been so crazy that trying to surf it would be suicidal (seriously).

why where abouts are you from???
wouldn't you get good surf before the typhoon struck or at the end of the typhoon after the worst has struck??

I live in Taiwan. Sometimes the waves from a typhoon are great, sometimes they suck. It depends on where the typhoon is, and what direction the current is, etc. Typhoons produce the best waves when they are far off shore. When they are close, it becomes choppy and suicidal.

Well said - same as cyclones etc - the longer range swells are the cleanest and the best.

Same with hurricanes. I know they are all the same things.

Hurricanes produce great surf for us on this side of the Atlantic
