those rates do look small, but it looks accurate to me if its haw. scale.

honestly, even if you have been surfing 3 months straight, theres no way youre catching waves and riding the face with even just an 8 foot face, which is considered 2-4 feet HAW. scale. much less 10ft+.. i live i hawaii which has some of the best surfing locations in the world, when i first started it took about 3 months just to stand and not sink the nose while dropping in. yesterday (after surfing 5 years) i was at pipeline, it was about 6 foot HAW. scale(refer to pic) and i was so lucky and happy to have caught 4 waves. usually on days like that i catch 0-2. and theres plenty of guys out there who do the same. the only ones who catch more are the guys who compete the crowd on the inside, guys my age who have been surfing all their lives and live on the beach (i am 22) or old dudes who have a good 10 years under their belt atleast. and like you, i body boarded. for 5 years before surfing. everone on here, experienced surfers and beginners, know youre BS. because the learning curve is just not that quick for anyone.

also, i found it strange when i read that youre 14 yrs. old, 6'2'' and what was it, 90kg? thats 200 pounds. ive never seen a 14 year old that big.

he finally got to me.

Head
Overhead
1 1/2 Overhead
Double Overhead
2 1/2 Overhead or more??

Like others, I can't see how a wave face that's clearly taller than the bloke surfing it can only be 4ft - nor a wave face that's clearly at least twice the size of the two surfers paddling up the face can only be 6ft - unless all those surfers in the pictures are pigmies or something??

I think some people play down the sizes to like 'hard core' whilst others play up the sizes to look less like kooks.

Personally, I'm happy in smaller surf, because it's less hassle to get out back and is just a more relaxing experience......... IMHO, of course....... :)

Same here, if something is double overhead shouldn't it be considered 12ft? also how can you say something is 8 foot if it is alredy over the guys head and he isn't even a quater down the face?, if something is over someones head then it must be atleast 6 1/2 foot, but I must say when I posted this topic I still was a bit confused, I come from a metric backround, so it isn't that big, but the waves are well overhead. Also I think ou have to take the sizing of the wave in comparason with the person when he is so far on the bottom he isn't on a slope anymore, otherwise there can be an foot of wave that isn't counted, remember it being considered 8ft doesn't make it any bigger than it is, when you say "that wave was 4ft", or when you say "that wave was 8ft", it still is the same wave.

BTW the waves I am talking about are in between the fith and sixth pic, depending on the day. (altough the sixth pic is twice as big as the fith, so it doesn't get like that often, and it does often go under head high too, but most of the time it is a little overhead.)

reckon looking at a wave all you can do is guess.... don't go for hawaiin scale at all. the back of the wave isn't the bit i'm interested in.
the way i figure it is if I'm up and riding a wave it's usually 3 to 5 foot. if i'm takin the exact same wave on the head.. it's DOUBLE OVERHEAD... i don't care what you say, you weren't there!
