pipeline trials

Postby overon » Mon Jan 14, 2008 10:45 am

I know that the trials for the Pipe Masters is usualy at the begining of the year. last year it was the monster energy pipeline pro. Does anyone know when the 2008 pipeline trials is, and who is hosting it? The reason i ask is i want to watch it via webcast and it should be getting close, so im itching to find out when.

Oh and did anyone watch the Da Hui Backdoor Shootout via webcast? I tried to find it but i couldnt. Looked like a great contest. Best pipe in years for it.

This is my first post here looks like a good sight

I know Pipeline Masters has happened but I am not aware of any trials that takes place this early in the year. I took a look at the ASP newletter and seen nothing on it for this month.

i dont see why people like surf competitions. ive always thought of surfing as like a hobby, like hiking. not a sport. but thres even running races through hiking trails in hawaii called the HURT so i guess thats a sport too. i just couldnt care less about surfing comps.

Why do people watch football? Why do people watch baseball? Why do people watch soccer? why do people watch hockey? Because they love it. And so do I, and since i dont live in Hawaii or Tahiti, if i wanna watch Pipe or Teahapoo, I watch the comps.

sports are more competitive like football and such. surfing is not meant to be competitive.

so....you dont see hiking as a sport because its a hobby but you guess it is a sport because there is a competition for it and surfing isnt a sport cos you just see it as your hobby like hiking? but it still isnt a sport even though there are competitions?

I dont get it.

nah i dont much either, never really inspires me or sustains my attention. i do enjoy the odd surfing vid here and there. especially on stormy dark sunday afternoons just chilling at home cos the surf is all blown out and horrid - its a nice escape :D

why? people play chess for fun and relaxation, people play chess in competitions, people play football for fun and relaxation, people play footie in competitions, people surf for fun and relaxation, people surf in competitions. they're the same thing, just people enjoying them in different ways. so whats the difference?

i dont know i just dont see those kind of nature things as meant to be competitive, since its supposed to be like an escape. chess and soccer are both competitions right off the bat. but surfing, hiking, skiing, fishing, whatever... i guess they can do with it what they want, but half the people who like the competitions dont even do whatever it is their watching, while some people who do like me dont care. there seems to be something wrong with that. im jaded w/ surf though, i get excited when i see people snowboarding, i guessmy attitude is if ive experienced it myself enough times, why do i need to watch it?

i also feel that pro surfers are part of that bull surf culture for sale like quicksilver, etc. since they practically sell the stuff. im not looking down at them, just the idiots who fund the companies that pay them to surf.

i am proud to say i couldnt name 5 pro surfers. i dont pay attention to the names of a break which sucks in conversations with locals, but i just dont care about it. i surfed pipeline 2 or 3 times before i even knew it was pipeline

^ who the fleshin' wears boardies to school, whats next, wetsuit langerie? (how do you spell it?)

But you know what bugs me, people who thinks you can't classify yourself as a surfer if you don't catch 10 waves a day, sucks.

I honestly think that we; not as surfers but as people! should stop trying to live up to or shun a label. Living up to a label might mean wearing boardies to school every day or shunning a label might mean making a point of not knowing who the top surfers are. Who gives a fleshin'?! really this xxxxx doesnt matter, let the non surfers wear boardies and lets not look down on people just because they chose a particular line of clothing, let people watch surfing comps without taking objection cos they dont get what surfing is about...to you anyway, let people think that if you dont catch 10 waves a day think that your not a surfer. Ultimately; is it important? fleshin' no!! do whatever you have to do to keep you happy as long as you're not hurting anyone. consider the objections, validate or devalue the opinion and let it go. there is much more important stuff going on in the world than who is or entitled to watch and wear 'sporting' line.

whilst I am typing this I am wearing my Billabong troussers and tshirt, I havent been in the water in aaaages and I seriously dont know the next time I will have time to do so. I dont call myself a surfer, I hate being labelled and pigeon holed into a way of living - surfing is something that interests me and I enjoy. I buy the clothes cos I like them, that may be because of marketing, yeah probably! All I am saying is please dont give a second thought to what I or any other person presents themselves to the world to be.....its really not important, live and let live. Lifes to short (and any other peace type soundbites I cant think of right now)

sooo.....did anything of ineterest happen in the pipeline trials. I didnt catch it.

The pipe trials are still on right now. they have had 2 days of competiton so far. the surf wasnt perfect but tomorrow is looking better. though the trade winds are messing with the swell. i think there is a day and 1/2 left of the trials and i know i will be watching.

i know some people think that competative surfing takes away from the essence of it. But, that mentality will not stop me from watching. i could care less what people think of me. If i were to stop doing something because someone thought it wasnt cool, what would that make me then?

I do understand the other opinion. I hear all the time how comp. surfing is good for the sport and will bring more people to it. I don't want that. The less people at my break the better. But, the more people that are aware of the sport and learn to love it like i do, will in turn bring more awareness to what is happening to our oceans and beaches. For instance the san onofre toll road. If more people were aware of the sport that kind of thing would not happen.

i didnt mean it, i dont really care either, and i dont make a point not to pay attention, i just honestly dont care.

people who surf really well and aggressively who are obsessed w/ competition are just as bad as "surfers" who dont surf.
