Gaviota Coast MAY 2020: just billie

Went out scouting for a new fun and more stealthy way to one of the semi-secret spots on the Gaviota Coast. This specific spot is about 25 miles west of home. Here's a few photos from the bluff top.

It was a beautiful day, but bittersweet. Subject reports "just billie." Billie's ever faithful companion, Roxy Ridgeback, has reached the elderly stage where she cannot join me in these great outdoor adventures.

Westward view from bluff. There may be one single person down below.

An unexpected find. It's a geodetic land survey marker installed in 1933!

This is a view to the north. This western section of the Santa Ynez Mountains always astounds me.

An amazing train ride to amazing views, the steam train on this track has a tilted boiler so xxxxx doesnt boil dry as it goes up the steep mountain side, it is a cog railway, at the steeper parts teeth on the wheels engage with gear toothed track.
I can see three river surf spots between the glacier cut lakes.

From the summit you can see how we search for river waves!

Maybe Roxie can join you in the future but for now it seems less distance is needed. Glad to see you still go out.

How far do you need to walk from the road/parking spot? Its interesting to me how few people are interested in walking much beyond about 500m from the parking lot.

Bill took me and Miso to these secrets Gaviota spots last year. This post has inspired me to take another hike. Unfortunately living in NYC means there is only concrete jungle here. But look what I've found right next to JFK.

It was crazy. I saw no more than 10 people on memorial day. The trail was unbelievably clean from trash. I think this is going to be Miso's favorite route in the city now.

Sorry to hear it. My dog, Pepper, can only walk a few blocks before giving me "the nod" to return home. He still has lots of energy to harass the mailman, tho!

Well, dtc. These are semi-secret and secret spots. So, it begins with knowing where to leave your truck or automobile: just off highway, by train track, abandoned tunnel, under the tree, etc. Some walks are short and some are long. Considering these spots need to remain less visited, I'll leave you guessing as to whether the distance is >, <, or = to 500 meters. :)

Thanks, Ol' Man. We're trying to dial-in the distance she needs. This is partially based on the private messages you and I exchanged. Roxy is very intelligent and works with me to find our way. At one point when out alone, I couldn't locate the trail. I turned to ask Roxy which way to go, like I've done many times before, ...and she wasn't there... :(

Hooray for Miso! She's the small dog with the biggest heart! Hooray for finding a semi-secret spot near JFK, of all places. :D
