HI Lisa and Dalton,
Interesting project you have. The obvious thing to do is plug into the surfing community, especially where & when there are film presentations. Here in the Central Coast & SoCAL, it is very easy to do this.
Here are some ideas that may help direct your search for information and contacts.
Local central coast website documents the filming of a classic 1977 surf movie.
http://www.goletasurfing.com/terryremick.htmlAnnually, there is a low key surfing contest at Rincon. It’s been going for more than 30 years. The owner of the contest is very well connected in the surf industry and may provide some contacts. This is the home web page and you can very quickly see the surf contest also includes a contest for making video shorts.
http://www.rinconclassic.com/Do you know what the Surfrider Foundation is? It’s an interntational organization comprised of surfers and beach lovers that work to protect the oceans, waves, and beaches. There are local chapters every where, including FL. Some chapters are more active than others, so contact several of them. I’d try at least 1 in FL, 1 in NorCAL, and 2 in SoCAL. You should be able to establish a network leading to contacts useful for your project.
https://www.surfrider.org/aboutTry a grand slam. Contact Bruce Brown’s his children. Bruce is deceased (R.I.P.), but he and his childrenmade many documentary films about surfing. Hopefully, you are familiar with the premier film, “The Endless Summer.” The website dedicated to him is chock full of information that may directly benefit your project.
https://www.surfrider.org/aboutSurely you know who Bud Brown was. If not, then know he is credited for “inventing” the surf movie. Check this website out, watch the movie trailer, and etc. This website is chock full of movies to buy & rent that fall squarely into your topic: The Surfing Filmmakers!
