UCF Film Documentary

Postby daltonporter » Thu Aug 02, 2018 10:56 pm

I am a research assistant for a Florida Film Professor who is conducting academic research on the history of surf documentaries. We are trying to locate public and private collections of historic surf documentaries. We also want to conduct oral histories with the filmmakers. If you have any information we would greatly appreciate your contacting us: Lisa.Mills@ucf.edu or daltonporter17@gmail.com

HI Lisa and Dalton,
Interesting project you have. The obvious thing to do is plug into the surfing community, especially where & when there are film presentations. Here in the Central Coast & SoCAL, it is very easy to do this.

Here are some ideas that may help direct your search for information and contacts.
Local central coast website documents the filming of a classic 1977 surf movie.

Annually, there is a low key surfing contest at Rincon. It’s been going for more than 30 years. The owner of the contest is very well connected in the surf industry and may provide some contacts. This is the home web page and you can very quickly see the surf contest also includes a contest for making video shorts.

Do you know what the Surfrider Foundation is? It’s an interntational organization comprised of surfers and beach lovers that work to protect the oceans, waves, and beaches. There are local chapters every where, including FL. Some chapters are more active than others, so contact several of them. I’d try at least 1 in FL, 1 in NorCAL, and 2 in SoCAL. You should be able to establish a network leading to contacts useful for your project.

Try a grand slam. Contact Bruce Brown’s his children. Bruce is deceased (R.I.P.), but he and his childrenmade many documentary films about surfing. Hopefully, you are familiar with the premier film, “The Endless Summer.” The website dedicated to him is chock full of information that may directly benefit your project.

Surely you know who Bud Brown was. If not, then know he is credited for “inventing” the surf movie. Check this website out, watch the movie trailer, and etc. This website is chock full of movies to buy & rent that fall squarely into your topic: The Surfing Filmmakers!

Here’s another tip: contact film makers Ellis Ericson and Andrew Kidman

Film Screening | On the Edge of A Dream

Join us for the Santa Barbara premiere of On the Edge of A Dream, a new film and book by Ellis Ericson and Andrew Kidman, featuring titling and artwork by Barry McGee. Chronicling the process of developing a new surfboard design alongside surfing legend - and Santa Barbara native - George Greenough, the film is an intimate look into the shaping community in Australia and the quest to create the perfect board.
For the past five years, Ericson and Kidman - both of whom are shapers - have been working with Greenough on the modern evolution of his Edge Board design. The book and film charts their journey as they collaborate with Greenough to personalize their equipment with a design he has been working on since the late ‘60s. Shot in Australia on the North Coast of New South Wales, the film features the original venues of Lennox Head and Angourie where Greenough’s innovative Edge designs were tested in the early ‘70s.
Discounted ticket rates are available for MCASB Members and students. Please bring your Member or student card to the screening.
The filmmakers will be on-hand to sign copies of the book during the event, with MCASB’s galleries open late to the public.

You can also google John Witzig , in Australia to access his long list of films and also Alby Falzon for his seminal work, "Morning of the Earth" there is a whole raft of Australia surf film creators.
A useful source of Aussie information would be Surf Journalist Nick Carrol brother of Tom Carrol ( world champ)

There is also a large amount of small excerpts of surfing films and news reel from WWII on about the Aussie surf and beach style and the coming of the Malibu Chip surfboard to Australia in the Australian National Film Archives.
There is also Nat Young's " History of Australian Surfing"

Have fun :D

The original poster made the post and never visited the site again so I don't think he/she will be reading any of this.

That happen quite a lot ask a questionnstay as OP for an hour or so, never to be seen again.
The other one is a new poster, who resurrects an ancient thread to post advertising. Or they are from an Indian or middle European English writing school , coming to post for practice.

Interesting
In this case The OP asked us to contact her and supplied the link!
