Roxy and billie went to their beloved Gaviota Coast again this morning. They went looking for sea stars and found some beauties.

We also looked for limpets - big ones! If you are not sure what a limpet is, then ask our forum elder Old Man Surfer.

Shady nap time! As shared in a recent photo post from the Gaviota Coast, our adventures seem to always include some nappy time for both of us.

This is where today's adventure ended. The tide reversed and was coming in. This signaled it was time to go.

We're reluctantly going home. The Gaviota Coast is magic and sharing is rarely required - even on weekends.

Once back on the bluff, we took one final look at the kelp beds. All of you know kelp beds harbor sea life. They are wonderful to explore.

Little known fact: Mother whales with calves will often take the water between the kelp beds and land when traveling north through the Santa Barbara channel. The water depth is relatively shallow, sometimes less than 30 ft (10 m). However, the mothers do this to protect their calves from the Orca pods that live and hunt in the channel. it's your good fortune when you get to see this.

I think I see two limpets in that second limpet picture and several limpets and a chiton and some periwinkles in the first picture besides the mussels.

I failed your quiz but it's great having a zoologist on the forum! Too often I focus on the waves and miss out on everything else.

Ol' Man has eagle eyes! The chiton went unnoticed when the photo was made.

Billy flexes his mussels in this presentation, please don’t accuse him of being shellfish!
He also hangs ten near the Roxy pro., bit shady that though!
Not much of this sort of action happens in Österreich but although Jaffa too is being a little geologic ,hunting something that sounds like it comes from Lord of The Rings......... Smaragd.....-
The river surf comp, draws nearer too

I missed the two different kinds of barnacles until I enlarged it

The top picture also has at least one limpet and numerous barnacles and sea anemones. The sea anemones mostly have their tentacles retracted because they are out of water. By the way limpets are simply seas shells that have a conical shape and a strong foot that they attach to stuff with. There are other shells that have conical shape but not so strong of a foot that are not called limpets. They are like abalone but the abalone shell isn't cone shaped so not a limpet. This is a great set of photos :)

Ol' Man,
very happy you are enjoying these photos! There is one thing, perhaps, omitted from your description about limpets. The (large) limpets in Hawaii are the most delicious! :D
