bit harsh? i can understand your feelings, it can be annoying and frustrating. however, everyone needs to learn sometime, and no its not the best way, going in big waves..etc... there are many reasons British travel abroad to surf (warm weather, consistent waves, warm water...etc)

I can understand your frustration, as well, when you say 'don't drop in on locals', beginners don't really know the rules properly or the etiquette even though they should, which is where i agree with you. the thing is, many beginners and other surfers think that surfing doesn't have an etiquette because it's the water, and it isn't a competition or a game (like rugby, football...)

It is dangerous but many people don't understand the strength and power of the sea, which again is stupid, but, you should still remind them of certain things and if they're struggling you could help them? maybe ask them if they think this is out of their league and tell them about a more suitable break?

you learn by making mistakes

Im a relatively new surfer and I accidentally dropped in on a guy where I surf... nearly got twatted full on in the face with a shortboard.... wont be making that mistake again.

I also reckon that big waves make you learn faster.... the more you push your limits the quicker you get better because mistakes mean that you end up being dragged up the beach underwater and half drowning yourself...you quickly learn to get it right to avoid that. You not agree ?

i sort of agree with that. it also depends on what board you're using, plus the type of wave. in this case, the wave sounds pretty heavy and nasty, which certainly doesn't sound a beginners wave, however, as stupid as it sounds, everyone is free to do what they want no matter how dangerous or stupid.

you are right to say people learn from mistakes, but often enough people keep making the same mistakes that can get annoying, although if you are polite and tell them they are doing something wrong, they might listen, and stop doing it *(in some cases this doesn't happen)*

Yeah .... I said sorry to the guy I dropped in on straight away ... he just said " It happens, I was just worried about my new board" and I didnt do it again.Everyones happy.

Life is to short to loose your stoke that easy. If they are that bad and jepordizing your safty go to another break. I agree it is frustrating and I politly educate people but I don;t let it ruin my session or trip.

Seeing as your quite new to the forum and "wanna give it a go" ranting away as you just have without offering any particulary helpful advice isn't going to be that welcome.
I also see no need for titleling your thread in the way you have. Might i suggest you try here instead. http://magicseaweed.com/surftalk/
I take you've had some issues with learners? Offer some helpful advice rather than just "stay home and don't drop in on locals". Did you take the time to speak with these learners?

Is this post a wind up - or are you one of these young people I read about in the papers - standards in schools thes days - tch tch

Assuming it's not a wind up - where were you surfing in Portugal. I only came across one bad example of tourist related stupidity when I was in portugal and I surfed breaks all down the coast - albeit later in the year, September/October

Calling beginners into huge sets is good fun.

Where's your sense of humour - there's no need to get angry about it?

I went on holiday to Portugal. I'd never tried surfing before but saw people surfing and got all inspired, they made it look easy so I went to the local surfboard rental shop and got myself a board.

I didnt know anything about surfing but it looked easy enough and the guys didnt give me any advice or word of caution in the shop so I went with it.
I managed to paddle out back but didnt know what to do once I got there so just tried to copy what I'd seen others do and ended up eating it big time and hurt myself on the reef, not one to be deterred I carried on. Some locals gave me hassle and told me to get the f*** out of the water....so I just thought well F*** you!! and carried on giving it a go and if they started....hell!! I just started right back, no one tells me what I can and cant do not with the attitude they did anyways!!
.....then some other people took the time to point out where I was going wrong in a friendly manner and pointed to some surf schools and friendly beach breaks. They were a cool bunch and were stoked that someone else could see why they get soo much enjoyment from the activity and shared with me what they got from surfing.

The result - I stopped getting in peoples way, stopped getting myself into stoopid situations. I came home learnt the rules properly, took myself to Saunton every weekend and I learnt to surf - I'm completely stoked!

The above is all complete bull! Ive never been to Portugal and Ive never surfed a reef break, was just trying to illustrate a point.....take that point onboard...think about it....or dont....to be honest I dont give a crap....I just had a spare 10 minutes and fancied making a story. I enjoyed it anyway!

Share the stoke.....or dont...whatever floats your boat I guess but you're the one getting your knickers in a twist....not the guys learning to surf for the first time! Take a chill pill, it may be getting stupid in the line up nowadays but all the non-constructive moaning in the world aint gonna make it go away
