I have surfed Polzeath and Perranporth loads, but never wanted to fight the crowds in Newquay to check out Fistral Beach. If anyone here has surfed all three, could you tell me if it is worth the hassle, or should i ignore the hype and stay away from a commercialised nightmare??!

Stay away like the plague in summer it is a serious kev hole the all the beaches are packed full of mostly townie tossers. The surf is probably the best in Britain but the sea is full of idiots that its not worth it ,just go in the winter when the swell is bigger anyway. Stay at Polzeath where it doesn't get too crowded and theres loads of secret spots around perrenporth if you want an empty wave.

Thats what i thought - thanks for the tip and saving me the hassle! I am new to Perranporth, so i don't know any secret spots yet.... The break behind Chapel Rock at half tide is v nice though, and I haven't seen it in a big swell yet - I can't wait!! :-)

In my humble opinion Perranporth is a better break than Fistral.

There are loads of breaks around the area that are much less crowded, go search!

Went to Newquay this week it was okay but the lifeguards push all the surfers into a space about 50 metres wide!so when a good wave came in it was packed! the surf was preety good though for the onshore winds that were flattening the waves a little.Try Perranporth it tends to be a little quieter and has a better swell. But is you want an empty wave go in the winter and find the magic secret places!

Perranporth at low/mid tide and Porthtowan at high tide are my new adopted homes. I'm going to Newquay this week, but at 9am, and only to buy a board... Then i'm getting the hell out!

Out of interest, what's the biggest clean breaking waves likely around cornwall.

Been surfing abroad and now I need at least 5`+

Oh, one more thing. I used to live in Plymouth, anyone got any tips about getting to Polzealth? or perrenporth or (regreatably) Newquay. (as I don't have transport at present.

Is there a bus from Newquay to Polzealth?
