A beginner in Bali in August: a good idea?

Postby Chipzter » Mon Jul 30, 2007 10:22 am

Hi - I'm living in Bangkok atm and I'm interested in learning surfing. I have a two week holiday coming up soon and I got this kick-ass idea about flying to Bali to practise surfing for the whole duration of my holiday. Or is this a bad idea? I've never surfed before and, apparently, the swells are as big as they get this time of the year over there. Maybe there are some newbie-friendly surfs as well? So, to go or not go?

Thanks

Why not stay within Thailand and go to Phuket? It'd be a lot cheaper and safer than Bali.

It's not a bad idea.. Do you have any specific beach in mind? How's the surf over there right now?

I was at Kata in early June, and it looked pretty crazy, at least back then.

Crazy? Was it when we had that big swell? Or was it just windy?

At the moment its fairly small, but swells come in all the time. It changes every day.

The waves were pretty big bro, I didn't feel like swimming too far..
What beaches do people mostly surf at over there? Patpong? Karon? Kata? Are there any instructors available?
