Hi! I am Cristina and I want to learn how to surf and decided to do so this summer. Our family vacation this year is in fuerteventura, can anyone recommend a surfing school for a total beginner!

i don't know of any, but there are loads out there, it also depends where in fuerteventura your heading, because there are different companies that operate in different areas, and you could also google it, there are loads out there

Hey Punky, i went to FV last year, i didnt hear anything bad about any of the schools, i was hitching a ride with one guy who owned a school and he seemed really good from what i could overhear but totally forgot the name of his company. Dont go with THompson or whoever the holiday company is, if your going to Correlejo take a walk down the strip and talk to each of the companies (dont go for anyone who approaches you) and ask in the surf shops

hey there. i went this summer and went to corralejo. it was awesome. For any level, check out the homegrown surf school at www.homegrown.es . They're pretty rad. But it obv. depends whereabouts in fuerte you are going, is it the north shore or near the north? If so, then homegrown would be a good choice.

All I can say is to do your research, especially as a beginner. Make sure the instructor to student ratio is not greater than 1 instructor to 6 students. Also make sure that the instructors have a lifesaving/lifeguard/first aid/CPR certification, you really want that if something were to go wrong.

Been to Fuerte several years in a row now and always book with the same surf school located in Corralejo although they don´t have an office as they work from their home (Everything goes via email of phone). They´re a family run business which actually is the nice thing about them. No big groups, very friendly and personal approach and the coaching is superbe. The Head coach is a level 3 BSA qualified instructor so he knows what he is talking about. I´ve been back with them 4 times now and it keeps on getting better (just like my surfing :-) )

As to the 1 to 6 ratio. Forget that out there in fuerte (the smallest we saw was 1 to 6 with 7 Island Surf only when they had 2 instructors coaching otherwise the min. would be 1 to 8. All the other schools rocked up with vans full of people and there was NO WAY they even stuck to the 1 to 8 ratio.

Good luck !
