Surfing Waves

Hi Guys,

This is my first post so be gentle

Just wanted to know if anyone had any advice on where in Europe would be best to go surfing next summer for 6 months. It has to be somewhere that is as cheap as possible in terms of apartment prices and living costs. Also I'm a complete beginner so the swell can't be huge although I would hope in that length of time that I will be intermediate by come the end of the summer!

Any help or advice would be amazing.

I'm not really sure, but what end of summer are you thinking of? the start of summer (June sort of time?) or the end, say august time? because most of Europe picks up most swell in September through to March sorta time. does it have to be in Europe? as there are many places outside of Europe that offer good waves with cheap living costs

Firstly thanks for the reply it's much appreciated.

I was thinking of heading out at the end of May 2008. It doesn't really have to be Europe but I need somewhere that doesn't have a massive time difference to the UK as, I will be doing some work for a UK company.

well, my dream surf destination is Morocco, looks awesome, although the waves are better in the winter, they still get some good waves in the summer. http://www.morocsurf.com/staying.shtml this site has some good info. but i'm not sure really.

I've heard that Corsica isn't too expensive but I'm not convinced by this. I have had a look online but can only find holiday rentals

Morocco looks good but I'm not sure how the locals feel about the British at the moment?

I like the sound of that although I'm not sure that the time difference is similar to the UK!

Portugal is cheap and plenty of good surfing - and if there is any swell somewhere will be working.

I like Northern Spain - more expensive than Portugal though and possibly slightly less predictable in terms of swell but still consistent

As a piece of general advice I would get a good surf guide book (I like footpirnt guide) or use one of the 'net guides. If you intend to stay in one place I would find somewhere that has a number of breaks within a shortish drive that work on a selection of swells - the get a more general guide and see if the area also offers what else you need.

Not a problem at all. The locals in Tarazhoute are all cool and on the whole the same applies to most of Morocco.

this book would be very useful, if you intend on surfing europe of course, but there is one to surfing britain (i have it) and its a great little book, with plenty of spots inside.

Yeah I think Portugal is the front runner at the minute as it seems to have everything we're looking for.

Does anyone know of any quiet towns or villages that would be cheap to rent in? The thing is I'm going with my girlfriend so don't need anywhere with lots of nightlife just a few beaches and a couple of nice places to eat.
