Does anyone know whether Black's beach down in la jolla is an ok place to surf for beginners during this time of the year? I know the winters get pretty crazy, but how are the waves right now for a newbie? I've surfed at Scripps several times too which is supposedly where beginners go, but the waves there seem to really suck right now.

Black's may be OK for beginners, but I think you could find other less hostile breaks to go to. Many of the surfers at Black's are very skilled, and won't tolerate interference on "their" wave. I would suggest staying at Scripps or Shores until you've mastered some of the skills. You can always hit Black's after you've gained some skill, as a beginner, I would avoid it.

If you're a local San Diegan, check out http://surfingsandiego.com. Got a great forum there with lots of helpful surfers. None of this tear down the new guy BS going down there.

Blacks is a good break for beginner if there isn't much of a swell. The worst thing about Blacks is walking up and down the trail with your board. La Jolla shores is probably a better place if it isn't too crowded.

yea i figured since its the summer, the swells won't be killer or anything, one reason i prefer to go there is cause i can walk straight down there from where i live compared to an extra 20 some minute walk to scripps which gets tiring.

like others have said blacks is a very competative and most surfers there are more than competant so unless you are prepared to fight for position dont go there
