Straight or wonky??!!

I've just bought a roof-rack for my Impreza after a few years with the soft racks, and I've noticed that a lot of people seem to strap their surfboards onto their roof-racks angled at 45 degrees....

This seems a bit weird - surely their would be less wind resistance with them pointing straight forward. Is it just becuase the wind has blown the boards off to an angle? Does it mean the boards are less likely to flex in high winds? Or do they just not know how to strap boards on straight?! Or is there another explanation?!

Thanks guys and gals

The boards you've seen at an angle have probably been blown that way.
